eSewa subscribers cross 20 lakhs, merchant account reaches 25k

eSewa, Nepal’s first digital payment platform/gateway has crossed 20 lakhs subscriber mark. As people feel convenient to pay by digital means (Mobile/internet), they are quite adapted to use such digital wallet platforms. So, the number of accounts for the eSewa payment platform has increased significantly.

As known, the “Refer and Earn” offer also encourage people to open an account in eSewa. The offer allows a person to earn up to Rs 30 for referring the app to friends/family. The latest data by eSewa shows the total download of eSewa app crosses 13 lakhs”.

  • Top mobile wallets/digital payment service provider in Nepal

eSewa was launched back on 25 January 2009 and got the Payment service provider license from NRB. In a decade of its launch, eSewa now services over 1 crore customers considering Zone points, mobile wallet, and internet transactions.

eSewa now has 55 thousand agents all over the country. Within a short period of time, eSewa merchant account has reached 25 thousand. The QR code-based payment through eSewa is now available in several restaurants, Hotel, Small shops to department stores to big malls. As the QR code makes the payment very easy and secure, many shopkeepers and merchants have started using this platform. Similarly, eSewa has also been marketing this service aggressively.

To encourage the use of such merchant account, eSewa is now providing heavy discounts and offers to the customers.

QR code based payments through eSewa/phone pay is getting popular and enabled by several merchants.

With the increase of the merchants accepting eSewa payments, the future is not too far when we can travel or shop without carrying any or little cash. So, the development of a cashless society in Nepal is inevitable.

Chief operating officer of eSewa, Mr. Roshan Lamichane says, “As we are moving for Digital 2020 projects, number of accounts in eSewa alone reaches 20 lakhs (.2 million) which is a good sign for the Cashless payment in Nepal”.

eSewa is the first and largest mobile/wallet/digital money platform in Nepal. Using its mobile app or website, customers can do hassles, secure and quick payments. People use eSewa for payment of internet bill, utilities (electricity, water bills), mobile recharge, bus/airline/movie tickets, school fees and more. eSewa has partnered with almost all banks to load the funds in its wallet.
