Sunil Poudel has been appointed the new Managing Director (MD) of Nepal Telecom. The meeting of the Council of Ministers at Baluwatar selected Poudel as the new leader for the operator, on Chaitra 24, 2078 (April 7th, 2022).

Mr.Poudel was among the final 3 candidates on the shortlist for the post.

A total of 9 candidates had submitted their applications for the post. And the committee under the MoCIT Secretary Baikuntha Aryal had shortlisted 3 candidates to present at the Council of Ministers.

Among the three candidates were the company’s Chief Commercial Officer Mrs. Sangita Pahadi, former MD Mr. Buddhi Acharya, and NITC’s Executive Director Mr. Sunil Poudel. The responsible committee had conveyed the three candidates to the cabinet meeting.

Ntc finally Appoints New MD

Ntc’s quest for its new Md has finally concluded but it has not been without disputes. Earlier, Ntc’s two former employees voiced their disapproval regarding new amendments to the MD Appointment and Facility Directives 2078.

Among the amendments, the age bar was lowered to render one eligible for the vacant post. As per the new guidelines, a candidate who is at least 56 years old is eligible to vie for the post. Previously, the age limit stood at 58. Voicing their disapproval, former employees had also filed a writ at the Supreme Court. The process was stalled for some months due to the stay order from the court. But after the Court dismissed the writ, the company proceeded with the selection of its new MD.

Similarly, Ntc employee unions have demanded to appoint MD from among the company’s topmost directors who had applied for the position.

Likewise, Ntc had announced a vacancy for the post in December last year after former MD Dilliram Adhikari’s tenure came to an end. Mrs.Pratibha Vaidya has served as the Acting MD at the company since January. Now, Mr. Poudel will take over the post and lead Ntc for the next four years.

What do you think of Sunil Poudel’s appointment as the company’s new MD? Will he be able to lead Ntc as per the people’s demand? Do share your opinion in the comments below.
