Apple to use 70% of Samsung OLED Panels for iPhone 14 Series

Apple is reportedly buying over 70% of Samsung-made OLED display panels for its iPhone 14 series phones. The US phone maker has resorted to its rival firm for the display panels since switching to OLED technology. This time, the company could be seeking more supplies than usual.

Apple debuted the OLED display on iPhone X in 2017. To date, most of its lineups have adopted OLED technology that offers a bright and vivid display.

TheElec reports that Samsung Display will be responsible for the massive amount of OLED display panels for the current flagship iPhone 14 models. The same report claims that Apple has ordered over 120 million OLED panels for iPhone 14 handsets. Out of the total, 80 million panels will arrive from Samsung Display. Apple procures its display needs from foreign vendors. Besides Samsung, its other major display suppliers are LG Display and BOE which will supply 20 million and 6 million units respectively.

iPhone 14 to use OLED display panels from Samsung, LG, and BOE

Apple could be buying far more from Samsung because the South Korean tech giant supplies panels for all the lineups in the iPhone 14 series. On the other hand, LG provides only LTPS display for the base model iPhone 14 and LTPO display for iPhone 14 Pro Max.  At the same time, the company is also facing product issues lately. Likewise, BOE only supplies LTPS display panels for the regular iPhone 14 variant. Samsung has the upper hand over both suppliers.

It is reported that Apple could use around 60 million of the 80 million panels from Samsung for the premium iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models.

Samsung has been praised by fans for vibrant display panels inspired by its homegrown OLED panels. This year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra has earned similar admiration for its excellent display attributes.

The iPhone 14 lineup though not inferior by any means still seeks to maintain the highest quality with the OLED Samsung Display.
