Fonepay Payment Service Ltd., Nepal’s Largest Payment Network, and NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, are prepared to launch a cross-border QR payment service between Nepal and India. This was revealed at the Global Fintech Fest 2023, an event that brings together fintech visionaries, thought leaders, and innovators.

The cooperation will empower millions of citizens from both sides of the border. The service allows instant mobile payment securely and conveniently through QR code scans at stores. FonePay says that such payments are performed at the stores through mobile applications certified by both FonePay and NPCI.

When will it launch?

As per FonePay and NPCI, they both are very close to launching the historical cross-border payment. Both have completed their operational preparations and technological integration is in the final phase. After this, companies can offer payment services to their issuing and acquiring members.

This remarkable large-scale cross-border payment will elevate fintech as well as promote the digital economy landscape between the two countries. It will likewise, give a big push to the digital payment ecosystem in both countries where electronic transactions are booming.

Cross-border Nepal-India QR payment will prove to be a major stepping stone for wider reach in the international market.

When the service commences, users from either side of the country can use digital wallets/mobile banking apps to pay.

FonePay and NIPL had this to say

Upon announcing the preparedness for the launch of Indo-Nepal cross-border digital payment service, the Chairman of FonePay and President of F1Soft Group, Mr. Biswas Dhakal shared his delight. He said that this payment facility will bolster financial connectivity between the two neighboring nations. He also believes that this will contribute to the development of trade, tourism, and economic relations.

Dhakal said, “This remarkable launch marks a significant step towards enhancing financial connectivity between Nepal and India by leveraging technology for the benefit of our citizens. I am confident that this initiative will significantly contribute to the growth of trade, tourism, and economic relations between both countries, ultimately fostering prosperity and development.”

Likewise, NIPL stressed its contribution to greater financial inclusion and economic contribution. The company said, “This initiative signifies our commitment to fintech innovation and strengthening our nations’ bonds. We envision this partnership as a catalyst for greater financial inclusion and economic prosperity and are excited to embark on this journey of transformation together with Fonepay.”

As FonePay and NIPL mentioned, the historically significant cross-border digital payment is on the verge of rollout. This will enable instant and easy payment for the nationals of both countries on their smartphones. Tourists, students, or traders while on a visit to either side of the border can take advantage of this initiative. When we have more on the launch date of it, we will update it right here.
