Viber, NDRRMA start a channel for public safety in monsoon

Rakuten Viber has started an NDRRMA Channel to strengthen public safety and help with disaster recovery during the monsoon season in Nepal by providing reliable and authentic information. The channel is a collaboration between Rakuten and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

This cooperation reflects both organizations’ commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness and public awareness by providing crucial information to at-risk communities.

The NDRRMA Channel on Viber provides multiple features that keep users informed during natural disasters, and helpfully save lives and properties, especially during monsoon. Subscribers of the channel receive real-time alerts, news updates, and essential safety guidelines ensuring that they are well-prepared for emergencies such as landslides and floods. Millions of Nepalese suffer from natural calamities during the rainy season in Nepal. So, this Viber channel will be exceptionally helpful in keeping updated with the disasters and staying safe.  

Viber is one of the popular messaging apps in Nepal. However, the company continues to provide various public services to make lives easier and safer by collaborating g with private and public bodies.

Viber starts the NDRRMA channel to enhance safety during the monsoon with reliable information

The NDRRMA channel is a critical resource at the community level which enables people to make decisions to protect themselves and their families, friends, and neighbors with accurate information. Especially in areas where traditional communication is less reliable or damaged, the Viber channel could be most fruitful.

Recently Viber and NDRRMA conducted a simulation to support the channel’s launch. This involved the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the National Emergency Operation Centre, local Chief District Officer representatives, and volunteers. The demonstration highlighted how the channel could be utilized during natural emergencies. It showed that the channel can be helpful in facilitating rapid and efficient response efforts.

Dr. Bhisma Kumar Bhusal, Joint Secretary at MoHA, highlighted the importance of the exercise, “Simulations like these help us streamline communication between departments, making the response time quicker and more efficient.”

David Tse, Senior Director for APAC at Rakuten Viber, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “This partnership with NDRRMA is a significant step towards enhancing public safety in Nepal. By leveraging our platform, we aim to provide crucial, real-time information to the public, helping them stay safe during the monsoon season and, hopefully, beyond.”

Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson and Information officer at NDRRMA added, “This channel is a valuable tool in our ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response. Now that we have a platform with Viber, we can reach a wider audience, making sure everyone has access to information they need during emergencies.”

Viber continues to remain a prominent messaging app in Nepal. However, the company’s services extend beyond instant messaging such as commitment to sports, travel, and food. The NDRRMA channel is its latest effort to make emergency response information more reliable, accessible, and efficient and help contribute to a safer and more resilient society.
