A hackers’ group that goes by the name “Hacktivist Nepal” has claimed to hack the system of Dish Media Network, the parent company of Dish Home. The group also claims to have leaked details of over 1.20 lakh users. The incident reflects that no entity can be safe from cybercrime and also poses a risk of our personal details falling into the wrong hands.

The hacking group claimed that they gained access to Dish Home users’ personal details, billing information, MAC profiles, usage reports, etc. But there is worse for users. The group has warned that it will leak the user data of the remaining 20 to 30 thousand users.

What does Dish Home hacking mean for users?

The hacking of Dish Home has exposed user data to hackers. The group can misuse the data in various ways or even sell it online. There are, of course, different possibilities for what can be done with the data. We often hear of user data being placed on sale online.

Talking of the Hactivist Nepal, they are currently on a spree. They are found to have hacked other government websites in recent days as well, including the website of the Department of Survey (https://www.dos.gov.np/).

According to Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), Dish Home has over 3.45 lakh customers. It’s the third-largest internet service provider in Nepal after WorldLink and Nepal Telecom (NTC). The company boasts a market share of 11.19%.

So far, Dish Home hasn’t made any statement regarding the matter. But it does raise a question regarding the vulnerability of ISPs against hackers and a need to further strengthen their security levels.
