Vianet Communication says it’s reaching almost complete internet service restoration after fire during the Gen Z protests affected its data center operation. The company has apologized to its customers for internet outage in a press release and thanked customers for their patience.

Vianet says that on September 9 at around 04:45 PM, a fire caused severe damage at its building, which stores one of its primary data centers on the 4th floor of Central Business Park. It’s the same building as the Kantipur Media Group. The ISP adds that it does have and operate a backup data center, but a sudden loss of “infrastructure overwhelmed capacity, causing widespread service interruptions.”

In its notice, the company shared that it immediately mobilized its technical team; however, given the tense conditions, its teams couldn’t enter the building. It does maintain that it became able to restore internet access partially using backup sites with tireless efforts. “ViaTV services could not be restored at that time, as our first priority was to bring Internet services back online,” the ISP shares.

Vianet is nearing complete internet restoration as Gen Z protests turned deadly

Vianet says its engineers accessed its data center at 12 noon on September 10 as the army and police controlled multiple fires. The company’s personnel risked their safety through a partially burning building, smoke, and shattered glass, and removed critical servers and relocated them to a secure data center.

According to the ISP, its services have been restored for most of its customers. It says that it’s on track to reach full service capacity by the end of today (September 11).

“We understand how much our customers rely on us, especially in difficult times. This extraordinary event has reinforced our determination to make our network even more resilient for the future,” Vianet says.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
