Private telco giant Ncell has renewed its license as an internet service provider (ISP). The authority, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) granted the telco its ISP license after a board meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
You may wonder why Ncell has its ISP license renewed while it’s a telecom operator. That has to do with the regulation. As per the prevailing rules in the country, a mobile network operator also needs to obtain a separate license to provide internet service.
Complying with the very rules, Ncell had submitted an application for the renewal and had no dues to pay for it. Therefore, NTA renewed the company’s license.
Ncell’s ISP license renewal is complete
Ncell’s current ISP license expires on Magh 04. It first received the license for internet service on Magh 04, 2062. With the new permission extension, the company can operate its internet service for five years. In 2086 BS, the company is reaching 25 years in service, and that is the maximum period a telco can operate in Nepal. This is why Ncell is planning an IPO and other measures to be able to continue its services.
As per the Telecommunication Regulations 2054, Rule 12, a company needs to apply for license renewal three months before expiration. Ncell acted accordingly and has its internet service license renewed.
