The government of Nepal has stepped up efforts to improve the internet connectivity in the Singhadurbar area. The initiative has been taken to speed up administrative work and ensure that no work is held up due to the lack of internet.

The communication minister, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, has directed concerned government agencies to enhance the ICT infrastructure at the country’s administrative hub. The ministry has been discussing with the Integrated Data Management Center (IDMC) to advance the ICT aspects in the government bodies. The minister has stressed the need to ensure high-speed internet access in all government offices and has directed agencies to strengthen their preparedness for risk management to prevent service disruption.

In a discussion with the minister, IDMC Chief Manish Bhattarai said that the current situation has an existing problem of slow internet, which causes occasional service interruptions. However, he maintained that efforts are being undertaken to address these shortcomings.

Currently, as per IDMC chief Bhattarai, there’s a 1 Gbps internet connection of Nepal Telecom (NTC). Also, there’s a separate 250 Mbps internet for G-Cloud. But he shared that issues in optical fiber occasionally cause network outages. He pointed to the need for proper ways of laying fiber cables underground to prevent mishaps later.

Bhattarai also said that there’s an ‘Internet Ring’ system to maintain service, but it is not as efficient, so efforts are being made to strengthen it.

He also said that although the external Internet management center is responsible for the management of the network, the relevant bodies are themselves responsible for maintaining the operations of servers, so skilled information technology manpower is needed in the ministry and agency.

The government has placed digitally-backed governance and service delivery at its core for public services. That is why emphasis is given to strong communication infrastructures for services.
