The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has requested stakeholders to provide their suggestions and feedback on the Integrated Telecommunications Policy draft.
The authority published the notice on Bhadra 03, 2083, stating that the draft policy has been prepared with the objective of updating the existing laws related to the telecom industry and making the implementation system more effective.
Draft policy prepared for Nepal’s changing telecommunications sector
NTA says that the proposed Integrated Telecommunications Policy aims to make telecommunications services quality-oriented, secure, reliable and accessible. This should also address various talking points of the industry in relation to service quality, spectrum use, license and renewal fees, etc.
The authority says that it prepared the draft in response to developments in the telecom sector. The authority says it intends to promote the maximum use of ICT and support the country’s economic and social development through digital transformation.
The draft also aims to ensure a timelier policy framework for the sector by revising existing laws and improving the mechanisms used to implement them.

Why the policy matters
Nepal’s telecom industry has undergone tremendous changes in recent years. The country now has about 98% 4G coverage while all 77 districts have FTTH coverage. Mobile broadband and innovative technologies have transformed lives with connectivity. However, the technology keeps evolving and what’s new today may become less relevant in a few years.
To address the growing need for newer technologies, better service quality, and their application for economic and social upliftment, efforts are necessary. The policy draft aims at bringing resolutions to these topics.
