Summary✨

  • WorldLink has halted its Limited Mobility WiFi hotspot service due to a directive from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).
  • Users now need to enter an OTP code each time they connect to the free hotspot service.
  • Despite this change, WorldLink will still provide free WiFi in public areas, though the login process has become less convenient.
  • Complaints from other telecom companies about the service’s legitimacy have influenced this decision.
  • The future of WorldLink’s WiFi service remains uncertain despite ongoing operations.

Nepal’s leading internet service provider WorldLink has shut down its Limited Mobility WiFi hotspot service. According to the company, users will now have to enter the OTP code each time they connect with the free hotspot.

The move comes after the telecom regulator Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) directed the private ISP to stop its WiFi mobility service. The authority sent a letter to WorldLink on Friday, August 14, 2026 to stop its limited mobility WiFi service. The company has itself admitted that it has stopped the service after the directive came from the regulator.

In its letter, the authority had asked the ISP to stop the features of a one-time passcode and login to connect and use its internet service. The company provides free WiFi mobility service at crowded areas and public spaces.

Last Year, NTA had asked the concerned to close its mobility Wifi hotspot calling it illegal but that did not close down that time.

In recent years, telecom companies Nepal Telecom and Ncell had been complaining to NTA about WorldLink’s WiFi mobility service stating that it was illegal. We commonly heard telcos stating that the free WiFi service was affecting their revenues. In response, the ISP had been claiming that the service was part of its additional benefits to its customers.

What Happens Now That Worldlink Stopped Its Limited Mobility WiFi Hotspot?

Despite WorldLink closing its Limited Mobility service, its WiFi hotspot service will continue to operate. What simply means for now at least is that the company has closed the one-time login process.

For customers, it means that they will receive an OTP every time they log in to WorldLink’s WiFi hotspot. And they will be able to use WiFi for a limited time.

According to NTA, WorldLink will continue to operate its free WiFi hotspots in public areas and government bodies. There are more than 14000 Worldlink Free Wifi hotpots in public places across Nepal and also in some major happening roads in Kathmandu.

But despite the service working for now, there’s no certainty that WorldLink will continue to operate the service as complaints over it has remained high. The service has been an excellent value differentiation, but its future remains in doubt with this latest development. Also, as it was termed illegally before by the regulator, let’s see how it unfolds in some time.
