Summary✨

  • The NTA fined 14 ISPs Rs 50,000 each for violating tariff rules and offering unauthorized internet packages.
  • ISPs were found charging customers above approved rates and failing to provide promised services.
  • Each ISP must submit proposed tariff rates to the NTA for approval at least three months before implementation.
  • The NTA warned that unauthorized rates could lead to regulatory action and required compensation for affected customers.
  • Consumers can report unauthorized internet packages to the NTA to ensure compliance and fair competition.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has fined 14 internet service providers (ISPs) for violating approved internet packages and tariff rules. The regulator fined each Rs 50,000, which is meaningful in current times when ISPs have withdrawn low-speed, cheap packages.

According to NTA, the decision was made after it was found that several providers had failed to follow the authority’s directives and licensing conditions. The NTA said the companies were penalized under Section 47(1) of the Telecommunications Act, 2053.

According to NTA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal, Major ISPs of Nepal were found charging customers more than the approved rates, offering internet packages without authorization, and failing to deliver services according to the approved package terms. Some providers also failed to inform customers about changes within the required timeframe.

Which ISPs Have Been Fined?

The NTA has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the following 14 internet service providers:

• Broadlink Network and Communication Pvt. Ltd.
• Classic Tech Pvt. Ltd.
• Websurfer Nepal Communication System Pvt. Ltd.
• Fiberworld Communication Pvt. Ltd.
• Vianet Communications Ltd.
• Aeronet Pvt. Ltd.
• Dish Media Network Ltd.
• WiFi Nepal Pvt. Ltd.
• CG Communications Ltd.
• WorldLink Communications Ltd.
• First Link Communication Pvt. Ltd.
• Pokhara Internet Pvt. Ltd.
• Techminds Network Ltd.
• Subisu Ltd.

The regulator said that the customers must receive the internet speed and package they have subscribed to, while service providers cannot charge beyond their approved tariffs. Such violations undermine consumer rights and require regulatory intervention, according to the authority.

✔️ What Internet Speed Do You Need for Different Activities?

ISPs Must Get Approval Before Changing Packages

Each ISP is required to submit proposed tariff rates to the NTA for approval at least three months before their implementation date. The proposal must clearly mention the applicable rates and when they are scheduled to take effect.

However, the authority found that some providers had not followed this procedure.

The NTA has instructed the concerned companies to stop offering internet packages and charging rates that have not received prior approval. They must also notify the authority about the action taken. If customers have suffered financial losses because of unauthorized packages or charges, the providers may be required to compensate them upon request.

The regulator has reminded all licensed telecom service providers that approval is mandatory before introducing any new package or tariff. Operating services without such approval could lead to further action under existing laws and license conditions.

Also, NTA said that it had neither received proposals for internet tariff increases nor approved any price hikes. This comes amidst wide talks that ISPs have increased the price of their internet packages after stopping low-speed plans.

NTA has also reminded ISPs that their approved tariff rates must be made public.

Consumers who find unauthorized internet packages can submit complaints to the NTA.

✅ How to Improve WiFi Coverage & Fix Annoying Dead Zones

Through these measures, the authority aims to ensure that ISPs follow approved pricing rules, deliver the services customers pay for, and compete fairly in Nepal’s internet market.
