Nepal has imported smartphones worth about Rs 3 arba in Mangsir in the fiscal year (FY) 2082/83. And as of the end of Mangsir this fiscal year, the smartphone import value has surpassed Rs 19 billion, hinting at the increasingly bustling market in the country. We have more down below.

In just one month period (Mangsir 2082), Nepali traders brought in 1 lakh, 27 thousand, 875 units of smartphones worth Rs 2 arba, 98 crore, 51 lakh, and 12 thousand. Smartphone import figures in Kartik 2082 stood at over 1.38 units worth Rs 2.52 arba. We can see some discrepancies here. Though the volume of smartphone unit imports decreased, their value was higher in Mangsir.

According to the Department of Customs, till Mangsir FY 2082/83, Nepal imported smartphones worth Rs 19 arba, 13 crore, 52 thousand. It earned the government Rs 3 arba, 56 crore, 97 lakh, and 72 thousand in revenues.

Nepal’s highest smartphone import source is China. Till the end of Mangsir 2082, Nepali mobile phone traders imported 9 lakh, 5 thousand, 707 units of smartphones worth Rs 15 arba, 4 crore, 79 lakh, and 7 thousand. India follows next at second. From the Southern neighbor, Nepali traders brought in 1 lakh, 62 thousand, 247 units of smartphones worth Rs 3 arba, 87 crore, 19 lakh, and 15 thousand.

In total, Nepal transacts smartphone imports with about 4 dozen countries.

The latest figures hint at a stable and steady smartphone market in Nepal. The industry suffered heavily during the COVID-19 pandemic and the following years due to the global economic slowdown. But the figures have been improving again in recent years. If the government had implemented MDMS, the official figures might have been higher, too. But that’s just that.

There are still months remaining in this fiscal year, so the year-end figures would reach much higher too. By the way, are you planning on buying a new phone or have you already grabbed one? If your choice is in the midrange, check out these phones under 30000 in Nepal.
