Among the cities, how does Kathmandu rank in terms of internet speed? We do know about the countries, and it’s usually the UAE, Chile, Qatar, etc. Though there’s a bit of a symmetry in the ranks, the city’s positioning also provides us insight into how the users are getting the broadband service. We have an Ookla report for Kathmandu’s fixed broadband speed, and we are sharing the details along with the top five cities with the fastest internet speed. Find all the details below:

Internet speed in Kathmandu and its global rank

In the December 2025 report by Ookla, a prominent internet speed monitoring site, Kathmandu ranks 114th among the cities in fixed broadband internet speed. The capital clocked a median download speed of 88.71 Mbps. Likewise, the upload speed was a respectable 73.22 Mbps, and latency was 4 ms. The city slipped one position down from 113th in November 2025. Anyway, the figure owes to the increasingly fast-internet speed plans launched by Nepal’s ISPs.

You may feel that the position is not as encouraging, but the rank is influenced by small margins. So, you should not feel bad about it at all. It’s also because 88.71 Mbps internet speed is decent enough for the majority of tasks we do on the internet, including social media browsing, watching HD videos, downloading files, etc.

And let’s add another fun fact. Before CG Net launched its stunning 120 Mbps plan in 2021, our internet speed was well below 50 Mbp,s and all of a sudden, 3-digit speed became mainstream for residential users.

Now, to the next part.

Top five cities with the fastest internet speed

According to Ookla’s December report for fixed broadband, Abu Dhabi (UAE) has the fastest internet speed among the cities, with 420.37 Mbps download speed. Second is Valparaíso (Chile) with 417.92 Mbps download speed. Similarly, Lyon (France) and Haifa (Israel) trail closely, ranking third and fourth with download speeds of 384.29 Mbps and 327.39 Mbps, respectively. Dubai (another UAE city and the largest one in the country) comes in at fifth with a download speed of 323.88 Mbps.

SNRegion (Country)Download Speed (Mbps)Upload Speed (Mbps)Latency (Ms)
1Abu Dhabi (UAE)420.37214.395
2Valparaíso (Chile)417.92332.226
3Lyon (France)384.29261.295
4Haifa (Israel)327.3993.037
5Dubai (UAE)323.88155.925

They also stand out in upload speed, though the figure doesn’t show a duplex scenario, meaning the same as the download speed. Abu Dhabi’s got 214.39 Mbps of upload speed, while the second-ranked Valparaíso’s clocked even higher at 332.22 Mbps with 6 Ms of latency. Only Haifa at fourth, has an upload speed below 100 Mbps.

  • You can check internet speed online yourself

Although we don’t talk much about upload speed, it’s used for uploading content on the internet, such as to Google Drive. It’s also used for video conferencing, file sharing, gaming, sharing, remote work, etc. So, it’s safe to assume that these cities in the top five certainly have a great experience with these use cases, thanks to the high upload speed.

Note: All the broadband speeds in this article are of fiber internet so it excludes mobile broadband stats.

Coming back to Kathmandu’s, it’s great too. With almost 90 Mbps download speed, users can smoothly perform internet activities whether at offices or home. You should read here about what internet speed is required for different internet activities.
