State-backed telecom company Nepal Telecom (NTC) has launched 4G service in Olangchung Gola via microwave radio link. The service expansion connects the mountain settlements at 3,200 meters in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality-7 in Taplejung district, which enables high-speed mobile data and VoLTE services in the remote region.
Prior to this, the region only had 2G services enabled via satellite link. Just recently, NTC enhanced the BTS capacity in Korala Border at the Nepal-China border to enhance the 4G connectivity.
For remote and rural areas where a fiber network is not available, Namaste WiFi is also an option that provides wireless internet via 4G network.
NTC continues to expand 4G in more areas
Going forward, NTC is also planning to launch 4G in the Badimalika Temple area of Bajura, which lies at an altitude of 4200 meters. More 4G expansions are also in the pipeline for the Everest Base Camp area.
The company is also working on launching 5G in Nepal. We can expect that to take a stride in 2083.
Being a national telco, the company is working actively to reduce the digital divide in the country. Besides NTC 4G in Olangchung Gola, there are works ongoing across the country to expand next-generation cellular networks for far more reliable telecom services.
The company expects 4G to transform the way people communicate and live. 4G’s high-speed broadband service enables NT VoLTE voice, high-speed data services, smoother video calls, and assists with local administrative works, health, educational works, aids the local digital economy, etc. Not only that, 4G access in tourism areas helps tourists with reliable connectivity they can use to connect and share, and also facilitates rescue operations.
