Communication Ministry’s telecom reform plans for FY 2083/84

Nationwide 4G launch

One of the key priorities for the telecom sector in FY 2083/84 is to expand 4G network across Nepal. As of writing this post, NTC’s 4G coverage is now available in 750 local levels, which is more than 98% of the total local units. But there are many settlements that are still without the perks of a 4G network. The government aims to achieve nationwide coverage. 4G enables faster data rates and reliable voice through NTC VoLTE, WiFi Calling, etc.

Commercial launch of 5G services

Most important perhaps, the government plans to commercially launch 5G in Nepal in FY 2083/84. So far, NTC has run 5G trials in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, but that stopped citing the lack of 5G phones. Now, the current government is moving forward towards the commercial development of the next-gen network, which brings much faster mobile broadband, lower latency, and support for advanced use cases.

Reliable telecom and internet access for all

The minister says that the government aims to ensure that every citizen has access to reliable telecom services. The minister has recently directed related agencies to ensure electricity at all mobile towers too. Access to modern and advanced telco services promotes digital inclusion and supports the country’s digital economy.

Improving customer experience

Another key priority is to improve customer experience and service quality. The government says it will make tangible efforts to enhance network reliability, improve service delivery, and ensure a better user experience for every subscriber. It’s worth noting that NTC is using in-house software systems to improve its internal operations, which eventually improves customer service as well.

Transforming Nepal Telecom

The minister also shared that efforts will be undertaken to transform state telco Nepal Telecom, which will strengthen its competitiveness and enable it to respond to the evolving market demands and technological advancements.

Stronger telecom regulation

The government also plans to strengthen the regulatory framework and quality monitoring of the telecommunications sector. The company aims to improve compliance, service standards, and consumer protection.

Promoting good governance

In addition, the ministry seeks to build a result-oriented, accountable, and well-governed telecommunications sector, ensuring greater efficiency, transparency, and effective implementation of policies.

The roadmap helps accelerate Nepal’s digital transformation journey and improve access to high-speed communication services for millions of people across the country.
