Samsung flagship convert to IoT Upcycling

Samsung has said it has launched software that will render older Samsung Galaxy devices into IoT, Internet of Things to give a new life to older flagship devices.

Samsung has brought this initiative under the campaign Galaxy Upcycling program and aims at giving a new life to older flagship smartphones.

The software is still in the initial phase and will implement the plans in South Korea, the US, and the UK at first. After exploring the usage of this plan and finding out its premises it will move ahead to other countries.

The Galaxy UPcycling will arrive on all Galaxy S, Note, and Z smartphones which were launched from 2018 onwards and are powered by Android 9 or above. Samsung has confirmed that it will add more devices into the ecosystem over time.

Repurposing The Older Flagships

The software will bring light-control features and “repurpose” the default sensors of older galaxy devices to revitalize their uses.

Galaxy device users will be able to utilize Samsung’s popular SmartThings Labs and choose how they want to utilize their older devices.

What is SmartThings Labs?

SmartThings Labs program by Samsung lets users test some features early and provide feedback to the company. This helps Samsung to sort out the bugs and finalize features as per the consumers’ will.

Turn Your Smartphone Into A Sensor

Samsung has said the “Upcycling” software can turn smartphones into smart home devices and function as a childcare monitor, a pet care solution, or a light sensor.

The software update brings added Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. It enhances the device’s ability to distinguish different types of sounds. It will allow users to save certain sound recordings, such as a baby crying, a dog barking, or a knocking at the door.

This upcycling can also turn older devices into light sensors. With the software update, devices will be able to calculate the brightness of a room and turn on the lights of the TV set via SmartThings.

This will happen when a user has already set up a pre-set condition of lights on their devices before. When the device identifies that is deemed than the preset condition, the light sensor will trigger into action.
