Samsung One UI Watch

Samsung has announced its next smartwatch interface: One UI Watch inspired by Google Wear OS. Their latest “unified platform” will give users access to Google Play Store apps and seamless connectivity with smartphones. The South Korean company unveiled its custom smartwatch skin at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.

On an exciting day at MWC, Qualcomm also announced their next-gen chipset Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G. The US tech firm says multiple devices will use their latest premium chipset and arrive in Q3 of 2021. MWC, touted as the biggest annual mobile event was called off last year due to COVID-19. With heavy safety measures, the event began on June 28 and will conclude on July 1 after 4 days.

Samsung’s One UI Watch combines both Samsung’s Tizen and Google Wear OS features. The next-gen OS will bring synchronization between smartphones and smartwatches. Having a customized OS on top of Android will allow users to access more applications from Google and third-party apps.

One UI Watch: Features

Thanks to the unified One UI Watch, when a user downloads any watch-compatible app on their smartphones, it will be automatically downloaded on their smartwatch too. The unified interface will also sync and display timezones from phone to smartwatch. Additionally, if a user blocks certain calls and messages on their watch, it will follow on the phone as well.

There is also good news for music lovers. One UI Watch will add YouTube and Spotify to the upcoming smartwatch letting you enjoy your favorite music on the go. Besides, Samsung will introduce better watch face design tools in the upcoming line ups. Samsung says its future smartwatch products will come with improved battery life, smoother performance, and a host of apps.

Samsung has confirmed Adidas Running, Strava, Swim.com, Calm, Spotify, Google Maps, YouTube Music, Golfbuddy Smart Caddie among many either apps will run seamlessly on both smartwatch and Galaxy phones.

Question On Tizen’s Future!

Samsung’s leaning closer to Google’s smartwatch OS will raise a question on Tizen OS survival. The One UI Watch bridges many gaps felt in previous watches. It brings seamless connectivity between smartwatches and Android-powered phones and also brings access to Play Store apps. However, Samsung’s home-baked Tizen might face an existential threat as Samsung’s Smart Watch takes its inspiration from Android.

Both Tizen and Google Wear OS come with their own pros and cons. Uniting them both means Samsung will improve its smartwatch user experience. It makes more sense that Samsung will keep its Tizen OS alive and utilize Google Wear OS for more apps access and synchronization between Samsung’s Android-powered phones and smartwatches.

Only time will tell how the South Korean firm intends to move forward with One UI Watch. For now, fans will enjoy the prospect of a new interface, synchronization, and lots of apps on their wearables.

Samsung has said their upcoming smartwatch Galaxy Watch 4 will come with their latest One UI Watch. The company also confirmed that the smartwatch will have access to Google Play Store apps. Samsung is likely to launch the Galaxy Watch 4 later this summer in August.
