Ncell Foundation is organizing a ‘Bin There, Hacked That’ waste hackathon program on June 5 on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025. The private telco is organizing the event in cooperation with Khaalisisi and Budhanilkantha Municipality. The flagship CSR event brings together techies, creatives, entrepreneurs, and climate leaders to play their part in promoting awareness on combating the waste crisis through technology and creativity.

The hackathon is a powerful public-private partnership (PPP) among digital firms, Nepal’s formal waste management sector, and progressive local government. The initiative between Ncell, Khaalisisi, and Budhanilkantha Municipality aims to promote scalable, tech-enabled solutions that address various challenges in waste management.

As we know, waste management is a rising and remarkable problem posing challenges to our cities, especially urban areas. So, it’s only good that influential firms are taking initiatives to tackle this problem.

The three here will catalyze waste management, recycling infrastructure, plastic pollution, and promote the empowerment of informal waste workers, especially women. “Ncell Foundation is proud to support this landmark initiative that blends digital innovation with environmental stewardship. We believe this hackathon will unlock creative, tech-first solutions to one of Nepal’s most pressing civic challenges—waste,” said Bishakha Lakshi Khadka, Director at Ncell Foundation & Special Projects.

To put this into context, Ncell generates over 3,000 tons of waste daily. However, formal recycling systems are barely developed. Women represent below 5% of the total waste management workforce. The program “Bin There, Hacked That” addresses the lack of waste management systems by developing “innovative, inclusive, and actionable ideas to drive a circular economy centered on community, dignity, and climate resilience.”

“This is more than just a hackathon—it’s a national call to rethink waste as a source of innovation, income, and impact,” said Amun Thapa, Founder & CEO of Khaalisisi. “With this platform, we are building pathways for youth, women, and technologists to co-create Nepal’s circular future.”
