Xiaomi’s latest affordable phone Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 plus goes on sale in China from Dec 12. This is their plan to put the new phone available for the latest shopping day (12.12, double 12) that is 12th of December. Which is also called China’s cyber Monday. Xiaomi is the first company to make the full screen phone, with Mi Mix. Now they have also become the first company to make the near full screen phone affordable. The basic price of 799 RMB for 2 GB RAM Xiaomi Redmi 5 (smaller size one), enables you to get a decent phone. Thanks to Xiaomi for this.
Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 plus share the same kind of display (18:9 aspect ratio), looks and everything expect the screen size, processor, battery size. Redmi 5 is of 5.7 inches whereas Redmi 5 plus is 5.99 inches. Similarly, the processor for Redmi 5 and 5 plus are Snapdragon 450 and 650 respectively. 650 is the same processor that powers Redmi Note 4 and Mi A1 (Mi5X).The battery capacity is 3300 mAH for Redmi 5 and 4000 mAh for Redmi 5 plus. There are 2 GB and 3 GB RAM version in Redmi 5 whereas in Redmi 5 plus, you have 3 GB and 4 GB variants. Price will go up if you select the larger screen and higher RAM,storage version. Know the detail specs and prices of Redmi 5, 5 plus here. Xiaomi’s both Redmi 5 share the color ranges: gold, light blue, rose gold, and black.
The two phones are very easy to hold in the hand. Even though the screen size is large, the whole body size is less compared to before, making it comfortable in your hands and pocket. The larger full (18:9 aspect ratio) screen makes it look very elegant and with such price range, everybody is tempted to buy it. Compared to its own Mi Mix and iPhone 10, it is not a complete full screen phone as bezels are still clearly visible but lesser. Now people habituated with the three capacitive buttons from Xiaomi phones will also love the onscreen buttons due to the better screen looks.
The 14 nm Snapdragon processor also performs well. Normal usage with lots of multitasking is found perfect. The back fingerprint sensor is also fast enough.
Although dual rear camera is the trend now even for medium range phones, this phone has a single camera but a decent one with 1.25 µm pixel size, soft-LED flash, PDAF and facial recognition. The flash in the front camera makes it better position for selfie lovers. The dual firing speakers in the bottom of the phone also makes it look like high end. MIUI 9 on the top over Android Nougat, along with new features like Split screen definitely looks better in this sort of phone. We hope they will add new features for the latest phones. They might be already testing features like AI (object recognition), Retina scanner and more for it.
Here are some of the photos of the phone. The pictures are only from gold color Xiaomi Redmi 5 and 5 plus phones.
We will post more photos of Redmi 5 and 5 plus in our Facebook page later.
When we posted the news about unveiling of Redmi 5 phone, people have started asking when it will release here in Nepal. As the phone is just available now in China, they will gradually release it in other countries. Nepal seems to be early for releasing of such affordable phones, even before the official release in India. Even if the price is lil extra in Nepal, people feel lucky to buy the phones in the local market. For others, they buy it from friends or families in China or India.
Xiaomi official website have not specified Nepal as a region but here they claim to be official. Being a small market and unable to meet the large number, might be the reason.
