The e-Passport is here in Nepal for a while now. The government introduced this advanced passport service in November 2021. Late Satya Mohan Joshi, the legend was the first Nepalese person to get an e-Passport. The existing MRP (Machine Readable Passport) with the remaining date is still valid. However, those seeking a new passport must get an e-Passport as per the rules. So, today in this article let’s learn how to apply for an e-Passport in Nepal.
e-Passport simply stands for an electronic Passport. It holds an electronic chip inside that can store the information of the individual that is printed on the passport page. So, name, address, date of birth, and other info are digitally saved on the chip as well. It is also known as Biometric passports which can be scanned through special devices. Also, the verification can be done in a few minutes in international airports. Thus, it will save time for everyone.
The government of Nepal introduced this passport to strengthen security by following international standards. It is more secure than MRP which has more counterfeit issues. For this important project, the government has signed an agreement with the French company IDEMIA Identity and Security France SAS.

When everything is going digital, having an e-Passport service is a most needed move for the country as hundreds of thousands of Nepalese citizens are traveling abroad for work, education, recreation purpose, etc. But the pre-enrollment service is facing backlash due to frequent server downs and issues. And the main concern is about waiting for an appointment date which may take weeks sometimes. Without an appointment date, the pre-enrollment process can’t move forward. Hence, the department needs to solve these issues swiftly.
