ZTE starts research on 6G pursuing 1 million Gbps speed

6G network

Chinese telecommunication firm ZTE has announced that it commenced a key 6G technology research pursuing a surreal speed of 1 million Gbps. The goal seems far-fetched at the moment and we could be several years away from it. However, the company maintains that it is committed to innovation and R&D investment to achieve remarkable network improvement in the future.

To its favor, ZTE has not been shy in pouring resources for the research. The firm spent 16 billion yuan on research in 2022 alone, which is 17% of its operating income within the period. It says 6G is the next “thing” in wireless mobile communication technology but is still in the early stage.

At the moment, ZTE continues to work on key 6G technologies that will set the roadmap for the next-generation cellular standard. The company says it will harbor its resources from its R&D staff to continue its work on innovation to drive 6G research.

The company plans to find out industry alliances, open-source communities, and other engagements to realize its 6G potential.

It believes an agile R&D strategy is a key to the effective research of 6G. The company has set up many active R&D units around the world. Its core focus lies on 5G network, chips, access, bearer, etc.

Over the years, ZTE has been spending at least 10% of its operating income on research. The company says the effort on the 6G network will continue to accelerate its development.

The talk of 6G grows around the world

Mobile communication has not yet achieved credible coverage for the current 5G network worldwide with a wide gulf among countries. But states, telco gear vendors, and developers alike have already started their 6G research. Nokia says 6G will make smartphones obsolete by 2030. India also expects the high-speed network to arrive at the end of the decade. China, Japan, and the US have all geared up their pursuit of the 6G research.

ZTE, in the meantime, is the only telecom firm with a goal to achieve the monstrous 1 million speed. It seems too lofty but technology has infinite possibilities. So, it’s very likely that the company could go somewhere toward its target in the coming years.

What could possibly be the use cases for 1 million Gbps speed when a proper 5G environment can meet all the internet needs at the moment? You can share in the comments below.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
