Facebook Agrees to Pay $725 Million Over User Data Access

Facebook

Facebook likely owes its users money in compensation as its parent company Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle a class action lawsuit over its handling of user data. This means you could be entitled to a share from the leading social media site. Find out if you are eligible for the compensation and how you can lay your claim to it.

Facebook agreed to the settlement amount over allegations that it allowed third-party companies to access user data without users’ consent. Compromised data included users’ friends’ data as well. Further, the US-based social media giant didn’t implement rules strictly enough on third-party companies that had access to user data.

Facebook owes you compensation money over user data privacy

It must be noted that the whole sum amount won’t be up for compensation to eligible Facebook users. The amount also includes legal and administrative expenses. So, the real amount going to the users will be remarkably less. Likewise, how much money one will receive will depend on how many would lay their claim.

One of the lawsuits includes Facebook allowing Cambridge Analytica to use its user data. The firm at the time worked with Donald Trump’s campaign which is not operational at the moment. Meta has admitted to no wrongdoing whatsoever.

Anyway, as part of the deal, Facebook has laid $725 million on the table for eligible users who will receive a portion of the total amount. If you were using Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, then you are qualified to claim compensation.

How can I apply for the compensation?

If you are eligible on the basis of the time you used Facebook, you can file your claim here. Your claim must be submitted by August 25, 2023.

But, in case you don’t approve of the settlement and plan on filing a lawsuit, you won’t be eligible for the compensation and you must do so by July 26, 2023. If you don’t do either of the two, you won’t receive the settlement and won’t have the right to take legal action later. You can learn more about class action settlement payment here.
