German telco Deutsche Telekom (DT) has launched AI Phone across various European markets. The company brought the world’s first so-called AI-powered phone with Perplexity AI.
DT’s AI Phone starts at a budget-friendly price tag of €149 (US$174) in Germany. Similarly, the company also unveiled its AI Tablet priced €199 (US$232).
The AI phone is based on the telco’s T Phone and was first showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2024. It’s currently available in Germany, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland and Slovakia. It’s said that the price of the devices can vary across the markets.

These range from translation, finding recipes, booking hotels, summarization, etc. AI can respond in both text and voice forms. The telco said that the pre-installed AI connects to different smartphone services such as navigation, calls, messaging, etc., to serve users.

DT’s AI Phone price in Germany
The historic AI Phone price in Germany is set at €149, which translates to Rs 24,400.24 at the moment of writing this article. AI Tablet | €199 |
According to DT, the AI Phone will permanently have access to the Perplexity assistant. And users who don’t want the phone will also get AI tools through the telco’s MeinMagenta app, which connects users’ queries to Perplexity’s answer engine.
“Artificial intelligence is the big technology of our time. It changes a lot. But there is still some reluctance. We believe AI offers significant opportunities. To use those, people need to take part and try out AI tools. ‘Our’ AI-phone and Magenta AI features in the app give our customers compact access to various AI services and allow them to explore this technology first-hand,” said Claudia Nemat, board member for Technology and Innovation at Deutsche Telekom.

Familiar AI features, but a likely trend of the future!
The AI Phone boasts familiar AI features we find on most flagship phones– summarizing, translating, booking hotels, etc. These are not boldly remarkable or unprecedented. But the thing is, a phone being launched as an AI Phone is different.
It’s also hinting at a possible trend for smartphones in the near future. We do have smartphone OEMs pitching AI as the unique selling point (USP) these days. However, there could be a day in the near future when phone makers will launch their own AI phones without having to promote them as separate capabilities.
The DT AI Phone also helps Perplexity AI gain exposure to more users. Already a globe-trotting AI platform, Perplexity competes with OpenAI, Google, Meta, etc. for the top spot. By collaborating with a telco to power a phone with its AI at an affordable rate, not only democratizes AI but it also gives it exposure to more users.
A few years back, AI was just a thing for smartphone photography for some tweaks and twists. Now, it’s a full suite of services to help users with everyday life. Maybe DT’s AI Phone is stirring us into the next era of AI phones at affordable rates.
