Nepal Telecom observed its 22nd anniversary today on Magh 22, 2082. To mark the event, the company arranged special programs at its central office in Kathmandu, provincial directorates, and offices across the country.
The ceremony held at the company’s central office was chaired by Laxmi Kumari Basnet, Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Chairperson of the company’s Board of Directors.
Addressing the ceremony, the Chief Guest, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, praised the company’s efforts in service expansion. He mentioned that efforts to reduce the digital divide and expand communication access in rural areas have been commendable. Further, he emphasized that the services provided by the company and its infrastructure would play a significant role in strengthening the relationship between citizens and the government through good governance.

The minister also shared that the company would embrace the government’s policies and programs, work hand in hand with the government in fulfilling its duty toward citizens, and that the government’s guardianship would always remain in the strengthening and development of the company.

NTC Board chair Basnet stresses telehealth and tele-education
At the program, Lakshmi Kumari Basnet, Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Chairperson of the company’s Board of Directors, stated that Nepal Telecom has been carrying out important work by adopting new technologies and research to deliver quality services to the general public in an accessible manner. She said that, as the country’s leading service provider ensuring connectivity, Nepal Telecom should focus on the development of services such as telehealth, telemedicine, and tele-education. She emphasized the need to develop the necessary infrastructure to ensure the reach of digital services, especially in remote areas, noting that this would have a positive impact on people’s quality of life and accelerate the nation’s digitization campaign.
Similarly, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) Chairperson Bhupendra Bhandari said that, with its skilled human resources, Nepal Telecom has the potential to further expand the market by building and expanding networks accordingly, and thereby increase revenue as well. He suggested that the company move in that direction. He further stressed that Nepal Telecom should work toward completing the various projects being implemented through the Authority in a timely manner.
Rajendra Aryal, Deputy Managing Director of Nepal Telecom, briefed the audience on the overall status of the company (More on these below). He discussed NT’s 4G coverage. Arual said that the company has been continuously upgrading and distributing its 4G services, resulting in the expansion of access to the service in a total of 749 local levels across all 77 districts of the seven provinces.
5G process on
Aryal shared that NT has completed the study of proposals received from suppliers for 5G. He added that the process is currently at the review stage. Aryal also said that the company has successfully completed the expansion of its FTTX services and has been continuing its upgrade and distribution. As the “communication backbone of the nation,” Nepal Telecom has long been providing various types of services even in remote and highly inaccessible areas.

He further shared that the installation of equipment received for the construction of the data center is in its final stage, a committee has been formed, and work has begun to review bidding documents for the re-tendering of the new billing system, and the bidding documents for calling a new tender for the HSS Core Platform (NT Core) are currently under review.

Online KYC update
The testing of NTC Online KYC Update for customer details of GSM prepaid SIM card users, which was being carried out at the Telecommunications Office, Sundhara, has now been arranged so that it can be updated from offices across the country.
It was approved to continue the program for the recovery of old outstanding dues and arrears, and a decision was made to waive the applicable penalties if outstanding amounts up to fiscal year 2079/80 were paid between Mangsir 1, 2082, and the end of Magh 2082. The deadline for this penalty waiver has now been extended until the end of Chaitra 2082.
SIM, recharge card vendors awarded
At the program, vendors from all seven provinces who sold the highest number of recharge cards, MPoS vendors, major leased line customers, and the best-performing offices that acquired the highest number of FTTH and XG-PON customers were honored. In addition, employees who completed 20 years of service in the company were awarded long service medals and certificates.

NTC’s Deputy MD Rajendra Aryal discusses the company’s progress
NT Deputy Managing Director (DMD) Rajendra Aryal discussed the company’s current status and the future. During her speech, he expressed her gratitude to the MoCIT, NTA, and other related bodies of the government and the company’s board of directors for providing quality services with cutting-edge technology and policy guidance. He also thanked business partners, suppliers, media outlets, journalists, employees, and well-wishers of the company for their continuous support and coordination.
He then highlighted the important works NT has carried out so far:
- The company has expanded 4G LTE service to 749 local levels in 77 districts.
- Mobile services are now available in 4,788 different places across the country. It operates BTSs of mobile services for 2G, 3G and 4G technologies. Only four local levels, Tanjakot and Adanchuli in Humla, Soru and Karmarong in Mugu, are yet to get NT 4G services.
- The study of the proposal received from the supplier to upgrade the currently operating 4G core system and launch 5G services has been completed and is in the review phase.
- The FTTH network, which had a capacity of 21 lakh, 74 thousand, and 64, has now reached 22 lakh, 65 thousand. Through this, 8.49 lakh data, voice, and NTTV services have been provided through 4.98 lakh unique CPEs. The company has prioritized the upgrading and expansion of FTTH services to provide high-speed internet services across the country.
- The company has expanded its services to implement the Government of Nepal’s Digital Nepal Campaign and the Government’s Telecommunications Policy by expanding the reach of state-of-the-art telecommunications services to remote and underserved areas with low returns. In the current fiscal year, the company has launched 2G and 4G services in Jirimali of Dolakha, Chaurikharka of Solukhumbu, and Gorakshep of Namche, Thalara, Khaptad Chhanna, Jayaprithvi, and Chhabispathivera rural municipalities of Bajhang, Malikarjun, and Lekam of Darchula, Tasithawa and Kimathanka checkpoints of Sankhuwasabha, Hima rural municipality of Jumla, and other places.
- The connection of equipment for the construction and operation of the Data Center is in the process of being completed.
- A committee has been formed to review the bidding documents for the re-bidding of the new billing system, and work has begun.
- The bidding documents for the new bidding of the Private Cloud Platform (NT Cloud) are in the process of being finalized.
- The company is active in building backbone infrastructure and expanding high-speed internet services.
- Under the agreement signed with the Nepal Telecommunication Authority for the expansion of the Optical Fiber Network in Karnali and Far West regions through the RTDF Fund, 267 km pptical Fiber Network expansion works are being actively carried out. In addition, DPR has been prepared and submitted to the Nepal Telecommunication Authority for the expansion of the fiber network in Lumbini and Gandaki provinces under the Mid-Hill Highway Project.

Revenue and Contribution to the Fund of the Government of Nepal
The company has succeeded in generating a total revenue of Rs. 38.19 billion and a profit of Rs. 6 billion in FY 2081/82. During this period, the company contributed an amount of Rs. 18.46 billion to the fund of the Government of Nepal through various payments, including taxes. The fees of the services provided by the company have been revised in a timely manner and made easily available to the general Nepali people. Good governance, including holding the general meeting of the company within the time limit prescribed by the prevailing law, has been given high priority.
Company’s customer base:
By the end of Mangsir 2082, the company’s customer base reached 2 crore, 19 lakh, 79 thousand. FTTH voice service customers are 4 lakh and 2 hundred, and data service customers are 3.74 lakh, and IPTV customers are 75 thousand. NTA’s MIS report for Mangsir showed that the company’s market share has reached 54%. Similarly, the total number of data service users has reached more than 2.18 crore. Out of which, GSM mobile data service users are 2.14 crore, and FTTH data service users are 3.74 lakh.
Corporate Social Responsibility
- Nepal Telecom and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal materialized their cooperation for Free WiFi services. Under the same collaboration, NT WiFi is available at Tribhuvan International Airport and the International Terminal Building in Kathmandu, two other international airports, and 31 domestic airports operating across the country. It is in process at other airports too.
- Mobile multi-chargers will be provided in various government offices, local levels, government hospitals, social organizations, monasteries, corporate houses, and professional organizations for the convenience of the general public. Likewise, Nepal Telecom’s high-speed Namaste WiFi internet service will be provided to government and community schools, religious and social organizations, and other 50 necessary institutions in places where NT Fiber Internet does not reach but has a 4G network.
- Awareness programs related to digital literacy, cybersecurity, mental health, autism care, serious diseases, and other health awareness will be conducted.
- Awareness will be spread through SMS/RBT in Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces for the empowerment of communities living in Chhaupadi and backward areas.
- At least 25 old age homes and children’s homes, orphanages, charitable social organizations, and health-related assistance for malnourished children will be provided to them from all over the country, including at least 2 from each province.
Service Regulations amendment
The company will also move ahead with tangible plans that will provide employees with career development opportunities. This will allow the company to get the maximum performance from employees to serve the greater good of the company.
- The process of timely amendment to the company’s Service Regulations has been taken forward to solve the problems in the career development of employees.
- Initiatives will be taken to distribute bonuses and incentives remaining to be distributed from previous years.
- Work has begun to organize the employee transfer process. Except for special circumstances, employees will be transferred only in the months of Kartik and Chaitra of each year. Currently, under the transfer policy, employees who have been working in one place for 10 years have been transferred to other places for career development.
The three major NTC worker unions staged a silent protest on Magh 22, 2082, demanding Service Amendment, a competitive environment, etc.

Quality improvement
The company has always been active in improving the quality of services. Even now, work is being done to strengthen the transmission line and increase the capacity of the power backup. In case of service disruption at any location, efforts are being made to resolve it quickly through the Network Operations Center, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Various complaints are addressed through the Customer Service Center, which operates from 7 am to 7 pm. Arrangements have been made for customers to resolve many problems by calling 198 and 1498. 2G, 3G and 4G radio network optimization is underway. KPI monitoring is being done through Corrective Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance. The performance of all employees and those involved in maintenance work is being monitored.

Upcoming Plans
The company is focused on service expansion and introducing new technologies. The company is working to expand 4G and 2G services where they’re unavailable. Similarly, the company is moving forward with necessary plans for activities such as 5G expansion, supply of new billing systems, internal software development, 7-7 customer service centers, 7/24 network visibility, 7/24 network operations centers, 400G IP networks, optical fiber expansion in all provinces, service expansion on trekking routes, and use of automated systems in daily operations, and the collaboration of private and public data center infrastructure.
