Summary✨

  • Nepal Telecom accelerates Ntc 4G expansion, adding towers in 73 sites in May 2083 while reducing focus on 2G and 3G networks.
  • The company emphasizes faster data rates and enhanced services with 4G, planning to reuse its infrastructure for future 5G deployment.
  • NTA reports show over 1.46 crore users have switched to 4G, while 3G users have declined to around 6.74 lakh.
  • Only three local levels remain without 4G coverage, as Ntc aims for full coverage by the end of 2083.
  • The expansion supports digital Nepal initiatives, ensuring reliable services for users before introducing 5G.

Nepal Telecom has been aggressive in 4G expansion works. The testament to it is that the company added 4G towers in 73 sites in the single month of Jestha in 2083. At the same time, the company also added 2G towers in 21 sites. However, the 4G penetration has become the major discourse at the national telecom company for good.

The company is prioritizing 4G expansion for various reasons. It’s the most advanced commercially available in Nepal. It delivers a faster data rate and better voice services while unlocking VoLTE, VoWiFi, and other extensions of services. But importantly, the company can reuse 4G gears for 5G network if it chooses a non-standalone 5G network deployment.

Also, by making investments in 4G, the company can save resources that would be spent on legacy networks such as 3G and 2G. Speaking further, the company has almost completely shut down 2G in the 1800 MHz band and started sunsetting the Ntc 3G network. Therefore, by default, the company’s sole focus is on improving and expanding 4G network across the country.

Ntc paces 4G expansion as 3G, 2G declines

NTA report for Baisakh 2083 shows that NTC has over 1.46 crore users on 4G network. At the same time, it’s seeing a continuous decline in 3G users. The report highlights that there are only over 6.74 lakh 3G users on Ntc network. The authority doesn’t provide status on 2G, but it’s safe to assume that these older-generation networks are not a priority for a large number of users.

  • Ntc 4G users: Over 1.46 crore
  • Ntc 3G users: Over 6.74 lakh

The company’s official says that most users these days prefer to stay on 4G if available. That means if they have the coverage and a compatible phone, they are most likely to stay on the 4G network. The company is also adding 4G capability on previously 2G-only sites, further encouraging users to switch to 4G.

Only 3 local levels to reach all districts 4G coverage

As of writing this post, only three local levels are yet to get Ntc 4G coverage. These are Buddha Rural Municipality and Shey Phokshondo and Narpha Bhumi Rural Municipality of Manang and Narpha Bhumi Rural Municipality of Manang district. Ntc 4G coverage in these areas is not available due to unavailability of suitable transmission infrastructure to those areas. However, 2G has been made available in those areas using satellite link.

Going forward, the company seeks to reach full coverage by the end of 2083. The company’s paced expansion of 4G aligns with the company’s goals to accelerate digital Nepal goals and ensure that users get reliable and consistent services before it launches 5G in Nepal.
