Summary✨

  • Meta Inc. partners with Data World Ltd. to expand its services in Nepal, as announced by Matt Jansen at the SANOG Conference.
  • The initiative aims to establish a Point of Presence (PoP) in Kathmandu by the end of 2026, improving access for local users.
  • This move will reduce international traffic costs for telcos by up to 25% and enhance performance on Meta platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
  • Meta’s market share in Nepal is significant, with Facebook holding 95.65% among social network users in the country.
  • The partnership supports the growth of Nepal’s data center industry and enhances services for Nepali users.

Meta Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has announced a partnership with Data World Ltd. in Nepal. The announcement was made by Matt Jansen, Head of Edge Strategy for Meta APAC, during a panel discussion held at the ongoing 44th South Asian Network Operators Group (SANOG) Conference in Kathmandu.

Jansen said that Meta is exploring opportunities in Nepal and other countries across the region. He shared that the Nepal initiative with Data World, a subsidiary of WorldLink Communications, aligns with its expansion plans. He explained that since Meta is primarily a content provider, it is working to deliver content directly to local users by partnering with data centers. He also stated that Nepal is now officially part of that initiative.

He added that Meta has consistently aimed to reach end users directly while reducing reliance on caching layers.

Jansen said, “Officially, Meta is coming to Kathmandu, Nepal this year (2026). Our goal is to have our Point of Presence (PoP) at Data World ready by the end of this year.” He said that the company entered India eight years ago and has witnessed tremendous growth in data traffic.

According to Jansen, if everything proceeds as planned, the PoP will become operational within this year, significantly improving speed and engagement for Nepali users and content creators. He also highlighted the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI), saying, “AI is having a major influence today. It has also affected data centers. The industry has learned quickly from AI’s impact, and many CDNs are now facing challenges because of it.”

The development is quite intriguing. Recently, WorldLink denied Meta’s partnership for a data center. But it seems Meta is set to build its own Point of Presence (PoP) in WorldLink’s data center. It allows telcos to connect to Meta’s network, allowing users to get seamless access to Meta platforms.

This will expectedly reduce international traffic costs for telcos by up to 25%. But at the same time, it will improve the performance of Meta platforms such as Facebook, Insta, WhatsApp, and Threads.

Data World Limited currently operates a Tier III data center in Matatirtha, Kathmandu, with investment by WorldLink. To establish its PoP, Meta will lease space and power from Data World while deploying its own computing and networking equipment.

As per StatCounter, Facebook has a 95.65% market share among social network users in Nepal. That’s a huge chunk for the country and Meta too. Also, the company’s other platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram are heavily popular, while Threads is also growing rapidly.

Meta’s investment in a data center in Nepal hugely bolsters the growing data center industry in Nepal while also improving the platform’s services for Nepali users.
