Summary✨

  • Bichuten Data Vault is building Nepal’s first Tier-4 Hyperscale Data Center in Chobhar and Birgunj, aiming to strengthen local data infrastructure.
  • The data center will ensure 99.995% uptime, scaling from 240 kW to 5 MW by 2030, and will operate entirely on hydroelectric power.
  • Collaborations with tech giants like Google Cloud and AMD will enhance the facility’s global standards and capabilities.
  • The center promotes digital sovereignty by keeping client data within Nepal, improving security, and creating significant local employment opportunities.
  • The Chobhar facility is expected to start operations in August 2026, marking a milestone for Nepal’s digital independence.

Bichuten Data Vault (BDV) Pvt. Ltd. has announced that it will build Nepal’s first-ever Tier-4 Hyperscale Data Center. The initiative aligns with the government’s vision to make Nepal a digital hub in South Asia and achieve digital independence by keeping data within the country’s infrastructure.

According to the company, the project aims to make Nepal the most reliable digital hub in South Asia. Under this plan, the primary site will be built in Chobhar, Kathmandu, and the other in Birgunj, near the border with India.

The project aims to strengthen Nepal’s reliance on local infrastructure for keeping data. Bichuten has collaborated with international tech giants such as VVDC Technologies, Google Cloud, AMD, and Micron for the data center. The company is led by entrepreneurs Naveen Agarwal, Min Agarwal (Fair Group), Anuj Keyal (Keyal Group), Vishal Kumar Jatia, and Sharad Goel.

In another news, it’s emerged that Meta and WorldLink is building a tier-3 data center, a project estimated to be of Rs 5 billion. It’s a high time for the IT sector in Nepal.

Bichuten Tier-4 Hyperscale Data Center Data Center Features

As per Bichuten Presser, here are the key features of its Tier-4 data center being built:

  • International-Grade Standards: It’s going to be Nepal’s first Tier IV certified data center with 99.995% uptime. This translates to just 26 minutes of downtime per year.
  • Scalability and Capacity: At first, the data center will run at a capacity of 240 kilowatts. But the ambition is to increase it to 5 megawatts by 2030. In terms of investment, the project is estimated to be worth Rs 2.5 billion.
  • Global Cooperation: Another key fact of the Bichuten Tier 4 data center is its global alliance. It’s being built in cooperation with globally renowned tech firms such as VVDC Technologies, Google Cloud, AMD, and Micron.
  • Localized Benefits for Employment: Bichuten states that the data center will provide significant employment opportunities for the IT and engineering sectors. Besides, the company also plans to manufacture servers, cameras, laptops, and tablets in Nepal. So, the benefits go far beyond simply having digital sovereignty.
  • Digital Sovereignty: The data center will ensure in-country data residency. That means the data of its clients will stay within the country, which will ensure their safety and security from infiltration and misuse. This also reduces dependence on foreign servers while also reinforcing Nepal’s national security and cyber strengths.
  • Energy Efficiency: One crazy good fact? This Bichuten Tier 4 data center will be powered entirely by Nepal’s hydroelectricity. Therefore, it makes another strong case for the promotion and utilization of Nepal’s energy to run domestic infrastructure.

Bichuten data center is a milestone for digital sovereignty

Bchuten’s Tier 4 hyperscale data center helps Nepal in achieving digital sovereignty. It lets Nepali businesses keep their data within Nepal, which maximizes their security and protection from cyberattacks.

So far, Nepali companies such as operators, banks, etc. have mostly relied on foreign servers to keep their data and run operations, which posed significant concerns on data security and national security too. That should largely subside with Bichuten’s data center coming into operation. It’s said that the Chobhar facility will come into operation from August 2026.

In the road to being a digital hub and achieving digital sovereignty, Bichuten’s data center project serves as a landmark development. It’s a tier 4 infrastructure with 99.995% uptime and has an ambition to reach the capacity of 5 megawatts by 2030.

In the meantime, Meta and WorldLink have also reached an agreement to build a Tier-3 data center. While saying that, WorldLink has a data center in Chandragiri, too. So, it only serves as another reminder that Nepal is on the right path to becoming a digital hub, as the ruling party, RSP’s manifesto mentions.
