Samsung Electronics, the dominant tech firm in memory technology has unveiled LPDDR5X DRAM with the fastest 8.5 Gbps speed. Short for Dynamic random access memory, the milestone memory is validated for Snapdragon mobile platforms.

With the latest DRAM, Samsung has surpassed the previous speed record of 7.5 Gbps recorded in March.

With its advanced memory technology, the company has continued to exert its supreme influence in the industry. The LPDDR5X DRAM has further helped to reaffirm its market lead. Mobile phone users will experience faster and more efficient computing power when the memory slots into their devices.

But the use of LPDDR DRAM goes beyond smartphones to PCs, servers, automobiles, high-performance computing, etc.

The  LPDDR DRAM is remarkable for its ability to optimize power and performance. In recent times, it’s become more prominent for PC makers as it combines high performance and low power consumption.

LPDDR DRAM’s low-power consumption also helps with better battery performance. Samsung says it helps “in an improved total cost of ownership (TCO) for data center managers while cutting down on heat and carbon emissions to ultimately lower their impact on climate change.”

The tech giant expects the DRAM to also get higher usability in AI markets and Metaverse soon. The faster, smaller, and more powerful efficiency is the hallmark of Samsung’s DRAM.

8.5Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM validated for Snapdragon chips

“The joint validation of 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM has enabled us to accelerate market-wide availability of this high-speed memory interface by more than a year, which is a tremendous accomplishment made possible through our long-standing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies,” said Daniel Lee, Executive Vice President of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics. “As LPDDR memory continues to broaden its usage beyond smartphones into AI and data center applications, strong collaboration between memory and SoC vendors is becoming all the more important. Samsung will continue to actively engage with innovators like Qualcomm Technologies to enhance ecosystem readiness for future LPDDR standards.”

The enthusiasm for LPDDR5X DRAM was mutual. Ziad Asghar, Vice President of Product Management, at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. said, “At Qualcomm Technologies, we strive to be at the forefront of enabling and adopting the latest memory specifications on our Snapdragon mobile platforms. We’re the first in the mobile industry to enable the latest LPDDR5X at 8.5Gbps on Snapdragon mobile platforms, which will enhance user experiences with new features and improved performance for mobile, gaming, camera, and AI applications.”

As LPDDR5X DRAM is validated for Snapdragon SoC, we could see it powering the next Galaxy S23 lineups next year.
