walkie-talkie

The government of Nepal has strictly warned against the import and sale of walkie-talkies and radio equipment without a license. Releasing a notice, the Department of Information and Broadcasting said that it would take strong action against those involved in the unauthorized use of the said communication tools without permission.

Radio Act 2014 and Nepal Radio Communication (License) Rules, 2049 (1992) hold that only after obtaining a license, radio equipment, walkie-talkie, and other equipment can be used, sold, or distributed.

The notice came after advertisements of such hardware were growingly ubiquitous on the internet in recent days. The department noted that advertisements were promoting walkie-talkies and radio equipment via websites and social media without any approval.

What is a walkie-talkie in short?

A walkie-talkie is a hand-held portable radio device for communication which is ideal in areas with no cellular signal. It’s a two-way communication equipment that allows users to both listen and speak to each other.

A walkie-talkie primarily contains both a transmitter/receiver and antenna for the exchange of radio waves, a loudspeaker/microphone, and a button to push to talk (PTT). The device works wirelessly on a single shared frequency.

As stated, walkie-talkies are a great option to stay in touch within close vicinity for example on a holiday or in some specific area such as a club. It is an ideal option for connectivity if there is no mobile coverage around.

With that said, it’s clear that using a walkie-talkie is legal in Nepal but, it requires registration and a license. However, clients who are using services from service providers won’t require a license. The prevailing Radio Act has clear provisions regarding the import, sale, and use of such equipment in Nepal.

Walkie-talkies provide reliable communication and are a good option for many for security purposes. Schools, colleges, bars, restaurants, and sporting venues can make good use of radio and walkie-talkies thanks to their efficient communication capability.

If you need one, then you can proceed to obtain a license from the government first. You may need to spend a small amount for its license which might include renewal charges if applicable. You must also be thorough with every detail such as the device’s model, location of its use, etc. in the form you submit to the authority. Misuse of these devices may incur a hefty fine so be careful on the purpose of its use. Likewise, intervening on other frequency also attract judiciary charges.
