Apple produced various models of iPhones in India worth $22 billion in the past 12 months through March 2025. The development aligns with the US phone maker’s plan to diversify its production and supply chains away from China.

The iPhone production has only surged in India in recent years, and as economic conflict worsens between China and the US, India could see more volume of iPhones and other Apple products assembled in the near future.

In India, iPhones are assembled largely by Foxconn at facilities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Foxconn is Apple’s global manufacturing partner, while Tata Electronics and Pegatron are the other two collaborators. It’s worth taking note that in the current scenario, one in every five iPhones is assembled in an Indian factory.

During the same period (till March 2025), Apple exported iPhones worth $17.4 billion from India only.

Apple’s growing presence in India, and why it’s so significant?

In recent years, Apple has put more emphasis on iPhone production in India and Vietnam. And it only seems to get more intense after Trump’s decision to slap tariffs at 145% on iPhones made in China. While the current US regime has exempted the tax on electronics, it also mentioned that the rebate is just temporary.

And India serves as a new frontier for the prominent phone maker. India is a growing economy with a large population and market. And due to generous tax policies, iPhones made in India are much cheaper than those made in China, at least for now. Seeing new opportunities, Apple has also opened stores in Mumbai and Delhi.

Apple assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in 12 months in India

Apple had iPhones worth $22 billion assembled in India in the last 12 months. It is so impressive that the figure competes with that achieved in the early stages of iPhone making in China. For Apple, India is both a production-conducive country and a market. Going forward, Foxconn is planning on starting a new manufacturing plant in Northern India.

Unlike in recent past years, Apple now assembles all of its premium iPhones in India, including those that come with a titanium finish.

Foxconn sees manufacturing beyond just iPhones in India

“The uncertainty over tariffs and geopolitical climate gives Foxconn a capacity safety net for the potential future EMS opportunities that will eventually fall into India’s lap, Counterpoint Research vice president Neil Shah said.

In a similar vein, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said, “We want to move up the value chain as much as we can in India.” He said that the company’s plan extends beyond just producing iPhones to include EVs, energy, ICT, tech, etc.

As Apple looks further away from China to manufacture its iPhones and other devices, India looks poised to be a top choice for both production value and market. The next few years will be interesting to see how Apple evolves with its fresh production and supply chain plans.
