Vivo V23 5G Review

Vivo V23 5G got recently launched in Nepal. Coming with a triple camera setup and a flaunting color-changing back design, the phone has Mediatek Dimensity 920 at its core. In this Vivo V23 5G Review article, we are discussing the real-life performance, camera samples, and battery life.

Vivo V23 5G Review

Design and Display

The attractive part of this phone is its flaunting back panel. It looks beautiful to look at and changes colors in the light. The camera array is also placed in a golden module to fit in the vibes. The design here is boxy with metal frames on the sides. The volume rockers and power key sit on the right. While a single speaker, USB Type-C port, and SIM tray rest at the bottom. The upper part is clean with just a secondary mic and thus, there is no headphone jack.

Vivo V23 5G Design

Coming at the front, the display is a 90Hz Full HD resolution AMOLED panel. There is an old-school notch cutout for housing the dual front cameras. Longing back to the old design might not please everyone here. I prefer a punch-hole cutout. Other than that, the display is nice and the contents look vibrant and punchy. The 90Hz refresh rate is also ‘okayish’. As an AMOLED screen, it caters to all your multimedia needs with deeper blacks and punchier contents.

Dimensity 920 5G Chip Performance

Powering the core is Mediatek’s Dimensity 920 5G chipset. The silicon is pretty powerful for a mid-range device. Day-to-day tasks feel effortless and smooth. This octa-core processor has a 2×2.5 GHz Cortex-A78 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 cores configuration. Handling the graphics is Mali-G68 MC4. The supported 5G bands are 1, 3, 5, 8, 7, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41, 77, 78 SA/NSA.

Scrolling on social media, and switching across apps feel snappy enough. Vivo’s Funtouch OS resembles a bit of a stock Android OS experience. The phone boots on Android 12 out of the box. But I couldn’t find the wallpaper theming options. Apart from that, you get green light dot notifications while using a mic or camera. Also, there is virtual RAM expansion to enhance the multitasking experience. You can add up to 4GB of extra RAM via using internal storage. So RAM management gets no complaints here.

Gaming is also well handled by the chip. You don’t feel frame drops or lags in games such as CODM and PUBG mobile. You get 60fps under lower graphics settings and gameplay is decent. Also, the chipset doesn’t heat much and thus there is no performance throttling.

Optics

Vivo V23 5G sports a triple camera setup on the back and dual on the front side. Vivo is well known among selfie and camera enthusiasts. Talking about the front cameras, there are two lenses; wide and ultrawide. The primary one is a 50MP one that captures really good selfies. Normally it captures pixel binned pictures of 12MP resolution. It is more than enough for selfies but you can always turn on the full resolution mode for capturing 50MP selfies. Skin tonnes come natural and the Dynamic range is pretty good. For night mode, you have a dual flash on the front side too.

Vivo V23 5G Selfies

The second one is an ultrawide 8MP lens with 117° FOV. It widens your selfie space to give a wider view. Hence, you can fit in more people or just capture more sceneries of the background. The picture quality is good in the daytime. Dynamic range is also nice. While the nighttime diminishes the quality. Turning on the night mode helps though.

The backside houses a triple camera setup. The main lens is a 64MP f/1.8 one which also captures pixel binned 12MP shots. Samples from the lens show its superb dynamic range, contrast ratio, and color accuracy. Skin tones are also very natural and the pictures maintain good quality. Using the 64MP mode doesn’t make a drastic difference with a slightly more amount of details. Daylight shots are decent while the nighttime shall require night mode for getting good shots.

Vivo V23 5G Main Camera Samples and Portrait

The ultrawide sensor on the back is also an 8MP one just like its front. It gets handy for capturing wider-looking pictures. The edge distortion is visible but the output looks above average. The dynamic range is good but it shall fluctuate in some scenarios. The color accuracy doesn’t stay accurate, unlike the main cameras. Well, for an 8MP resolution ultrawide camera, it does its job. And the 2MP macro sensor is not that great. You can capture macro shots but focus on the subjects take time. A telephoto lens would have been much appreciated here.

Battery Life and Charging

Vivo V23 5G boasts a 4200mAh Li-Po battery. You get a 44W fast charger inside the box too. It takes an hour plus 7 minutes to fill up the cell from 0 to 100%. The battery life on this phone is pretty good. You get around 6 hours plus SOT with medium usage and light gaming. The standby is also good with minimal battery drain. Intensive gaming does take a hit but the Dimensity 920 5G is efficient on battery. Hence, battery life becomes good even for a 4200mAh cell.

Verdict

Vivo V23 5G is a pretty phone for those who prefer attractive design. The dual selfie camera is more than enough for capturing decent pictures. Also, the triple-back setup does its job. Apart from the macro lens, the 64MP primary and 8MP ultrawide sensors are good ones. Dynamic range and color contrast look good on the main sensor. It is a good camera phone.

For performance too, the Dimensity 920 5G is a capable chip when it comes to gaming or normal usage. The refresh rate could have been 120Hz instead of 90Hz. If you are coming from a 120Hz screen, you might find the 90Hz nothing amusing. Also, there could have been a stereo speaker setup instead of a mono one. Audio from the single speaker is clear and loud but stereo speakers are better to have. The front design is a personal preference but I would prefer a punch-hole design rather than old school notch it carries.

The phone is decent for the camera, day-to-day usage, and gaming. Regarding the price, it could have been a lot better. Here in Nepal, it is marginally more expensive than in India. For a similar price, you get better devices with more features. Let’s hope Vivo Nepal would improvise pricing shortly, given Vivo has its specified group of customers. And IQoo phones are also potential fan favorites if it launches in Nepal.
