Huawei Launches 2nd Seeds for the Future Program in Nepal

Huawei Seeds for the Future 2022 Nepal

Huawei has announced the Seeds for the Future program for the second edition in Nepal. This program brings an opportunity to Nepali students a look into the ICT industry with a prominent global tech company. It is the flagship CSR campaign of the Chinese tech giant that launches globally for students pursuing their careers in ICT.

The prestigious campaign takes an application from undergraduate students from any ICT discipline. A total of 7 students from Nepal will be selected this year. For their selection, their nomination will go through a competitive application process. Once selected, they will participate in the first-ever regional on-site program. It will be held in Bangkok from Aug 19 to Aug 27.

The Seeds for the Future program was first launched in 2008 in Thailand. Since then over 12,000 students from over 130 countries and regions have participated in this program. It is the second time, Huawei has launched this campaign in Nepal.

Recently, Huawei introduced its selection committee for the program at a press meet. The committee consists of prominent figures like Prof. Dr. Shashidhar Ram Joshi, Prof. Dr. Subarna Shakya, Prof. Timila Yami Thapa, and Prof. Dr. Manish Pokharel. All the distinguished figures are prominent professors of ICT.

Meanwhile, Huawei has also partnered with UNESCO in Nepal. Both will engage students in their “Next 50” campaign.

A first-hand insight into the ICT industry with the Seeds for the Future Nepal campaign

The students selected for the campaign will get a first-hand insight into the ICT industry. They will also travel to Bangkok for 9 days where they will receive entry-level courses on key technologies. These courses will familiarize them with 5G, cloud computing, AI, ICT, developments, etc. Through this, the students will develop an international perspective through visits to international organizations, and by hearing from the experts about prevalent technologies in the world of ICT.

Besides, the participants will experience new cultures, and make new friends from the Asia Pacific. This time, the students will also be part of the “Tech4Good” group project. For this, they will have to come up with an original idea to address real-world environmental or social problems. The winning team will get to go to the Tech4Good accelerator camp that will be held in Singapore from Aug 29 to Sep 02.

Likewise, in Nepal participants will get a chance to look into the ICT industry with a visit to the Huawei Nepal office. They will also be taking classes from industry experts, and get an overnight trip to a Huawei-built base station at a scenic location.

For undergraduates from any ICT discipline

Huawei says its Seeds for the Future program takes an application from all the undergraduate students from Nepal who are studying any ICT discipline. You will need to upload their latest mark sheet to verify their qualification. In the case of freshmen students, you need a recommendation letter from their institution. A further 500-600 word motivation letter is also required in the process.

The selection committee will shortlist and choose the final 7 students for a final interview.

At the press meet, Prof. Shashidhar Ram Joshi, Dean, TU IoE recalled the experience of the 2021 edition. He called it exciting and praised the students from last year as very deserving of deserving. Professor said, “Huawei is helping the budding talents in the ICT field of Nepal.  I’d like to thank SubHuawei for organizing such kind of event for our students where they will get to learn about 5G, Cloud, and AI.”

Similarly, Prof. Timila Yami Thapa called last year’s edition a great initiative and praised Huawei as a world leader in technology. She stressed the importance of both government and private sectors investing in youth talents for the future. Thapa called the Seeds program a modal for talent development that gives students “a great networking opportunity.”

“Reskilling and upskilling for existing talents can only happen by collaborating with multinationals like Huawei”, she added.

Huawei helping with the ICT infrastructure development in Nepal

Prof. Subarna Shakya, Director, TU Innovation Center praised Huawei as a leading ICT company. “There is a great need for ICT infrastructure development in Nepal and Huawei is contributing towards that. E-government and cloud-governance are the need of the hour”, he said.

He also thanked the company for the opportunity it is providing students through the Seeds for the Future program for the 2nd time in Nepal.

Mr. Michael Croft, UNESCO representative to Nepal called the program an intersection between technology, youth, and learning. “Huawei and UNESCO already have a partnership at the global level to work in different regions to put together young people and technology”, he said.

He then highlighted the need for investing in youth talents who could also tackle climate change and other issues relating to sustainable development.

William Zhang, CEO of Huawei Technologies Nepal Pvt. Ltd., said, “At Huawei, we understand that digital talents are the foundation of digital development. We are actively promoting the growth of digital talents in all 170 countries and regions that we are present. I think we can all agree that Nepal has great potential for digital transformation. At the heart of this transformation will be talented young individuals. Through programs such as Seeds for the Future, we hope to contribute towards the cultivation of such digital talents.”
