Nepal Telecom (NTC) has expressed serious concern over a littering incident in its office in Birgunj. In a statement, the state-backed operator said that the incident has drawn its attention to the grave incident. Today on Chaitra 21, 2079, some unauthorized people laid garbage in the open at the premises of Ntc’s Provincial Directorate Birgunj, Madhesh Province.

As per the telco, the incident took place around 9:15 am when a group of 15-17 people disposed of 5/7 tractors of garbage in its directorate office in Birginj. The company has expressed grave concern over the issue.

In its statement, Ntc the government-backed telco said, “The company regrets this activity which goes against the city’s desire of creating a clean and beautiful city. The act has not only impacted the atmosphere but has also adversely affected the working environment of the company”.

It is said that the garbage was thrown in protest against the telco for not repairing the road after laying its cables underground. According to Imtiyaj Alam, Deputy Mayor of Birgunj Metropolitan City, the act was to put pressure on the company to repair the road soon. Anyway, resorting to such behavior can’t be justified as it doesn’t align with the values of good governance more so when it occurs from an authoritative body whose job is to enforce the rule of law.

Ntc demands that such incident is avoided in the future

The operator has condemned the behavior. It also demanded that such incidents are avoided from happening again.

“Condemning the incident, the company wants to draw the attention of all to prevent such unwanted incidents from ever occurring in the future,” the telco’s press release read.

The government has listed telecom as one of the essential services and such an act is indeed highly condemnable. If it originates from a conflict, then the solution must come from dialogue as such behavior puts a security risk to all. If sensitivity is not acknowledged, it’s possible that telecom equipment could be compromised and affect telecom service for the subscribers. It would set an immoral precedent.

Let’s hope that the concerned body takes the necessary steps to rule out any such occurrences in the future.
