MIUI

Xiaomi’s Android-based custom software MIUI has surpassed 600 million active users monthly. First introduced in 2010, the custom Android OS has seen a meteoric rise in the Android ecosystem thanks to the exponential growth of Redmi and Xiaomi smartphones.

If you were wondering which came first MIUI or Xiaomi, it’s the latter. The Chinese smartphone giant’s mobile software came in 2010 just a year before Mi 1. As per the latest report as of May 21, 2023, the Android-based smartphone OS has hit 600 million active user milestones. The figure makes MIUI one of the most popular Android OS in the market. Xiaomi’s flagship phones and staggering Redmi Note series phones have propped MIUI’s global popularity. The Redmi Note series has already hit 320 million units sale being a highly commercial subsidiary for the Chinese tech leader.

What’s also impressive is that the company increased by 100 million active users in just a year and a half.

What is Xiaomi MIUI?

Xiaomi MIUI is the company’s version of the vanilla Android OS. With each iteration, google releases a new OS for Android-powered smartphones. To give a fresh and distinct user experience, each smartphone OEM tends to tweak the original Android OS and use its own on top of it. Examples include Samsung’s One UI and OnePlus’s OxygenOS, Vivo’s FunTouch OS, etc. MIUI is Xiaomi’s sweet treat to its users.

2018 saw the number explode to 200 million. And again, in a year later, the total number of users on MIUI surpassed 300 million on October 28, 2019.

Maintaining this steady growth, the active user toll reached 400 million in 2020. In 2022, the global active user base of MIUI crossed the 500 million mark. Now, the number has exceeded 600 million.

The OS has evolved through the years with the company making several enhancements, tweaks, and twists to enhance user experience. Currently, MIUI 14 is the latest MIUI skin.

MIUI has been discussed as taking its inspiration from iOS which is arguably evident in the control center, color scheme, and volume sliders. It has also been blamed for being ad and bloatware-heavy. But Xiaomi has been continuously working on improving the user experience.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
