All Nepal government websites have been restored after a short outage since nighttime on Tuesday, June 20. The sites with domain .gov.np were down keeping visitors out of service for a few hours.

The websites went offline after a transformer blast at Singhadurbar. Due to the explosion, the integrated data center National Information Technology Center (NITC) suffered functional issues. NITC Executive Director Pradip Paudel said, “Power cut was frequency since morning, but at around 1 PM, a transformer exploded. We still continued the operation of the data center and server with the generator but due to the possible risks, had to shut it down.”

NITC has issued a statement clarifying the cause of websites going offline and their restoration.

NITC releases a statement after Nepal government-operated websites were restored to services

“On 2080-03-05, at 1:30 pm, a transformer at the K3 sub-station exploded which cut off power to the GIDC (NITC),” the notice reads. This means the center continues, “that generator had to be used since morning as the power outage was fluctuating.”

“But after long usage, the cable of the generator also began to have issues. Then from 7:30 pm, the data center’s services began interrupted. After the loss of power to GIDC, the data center was unable to operate. This led to the disruption of its services only for a while but all of its services have been restored,” it adds.

GIDC nepal government websites offline and restored

That means, all the websites and online systems operated from GIDC are now back online. The center has likewise, apologized for the inconvenience.

Electricity disruption has become more frequent in recent days causing huge inconvenience to the people. Especially online systems and services which rely on continuous power supply have suffered from constant electricity failure. And the complaints have begun to grow lately. It’s only better the responsible bodies adopted stringent measures to solve the issue sooner than later.
