Nepal Telecom (NTC) has launched GSM mobile service in the Tsho-Rolpa trekking route, along with other places, based on satellite technology. The service uses VSAT telecenter equipment and provides GSM mobile, telephone, and data services based on 2G.
The company has been expanding its services in remote and rural regions with VSAT tech, where traditional infrastructure is hard to install. In its latest expansion, the expansion has been included in Kanchho village, Kugaun, and Nijal in Upper Dolpa of Dolpa district, Na-gaun in Dolakha, where the Tsho-Rolpa trekking route is located, and Chandanbari in Rasuwa, where the Gosaikunda trekking route is located.

Similarly, there are such sites in Bhimthang, Phu, and Nar in Manang, Beding and Na-gaun (Tsho-Rolpa) in Dolakha, Ghunsa and Olangchungola in Taplejung, Gorakshep and Monju in Solukhumbu, Gosainkunda and Chandanbari in Rasuwa, and Tinkar in Darchula, Bichha in Bajura, and Guthichaur in Jumla.

NT leverages VSAT technology to provide services in both urban and rural areas to ensure reliable communications services. If you didn’t know, NT transports telco equipment by helicopter to install services in areas that are geographically adverse.
The company stresses that it expands services in rural and remote areas not for commercial returns but solely to realize its slogan ‘Nepal Telecom is the communication of the nation’.
The company says that it will upgrade the sites (likely to 4G) in the coming days.
These works are being done under the Backbone Transmission Project being implemented by Nepal Telecom. Similarly, necessary work is being carried out to ensure high-capacity, secure, and reliable data transmission services in major urban, semi-urban, and rural areas along the East-West and North-South corridors through the expansion of the optical fiber network operated under the Backbone Transmission Directorate.
Keep note that NTC mobile service is available in Tilicho Lake, Manaslu, Larke Pass, etc.
NTC is conducting backbone strengthening programs
The company says that it is also conducting various Backbone Strengthening Programs. Accordingly, optical fiber cable (OFC) survey, ADSS OFC expansion, etc., are being done at various places. In collaboration with the Nepal Army, the Road Department, and other agencies, underground OFC expansion work is underway on various roads. Similarly, necessary work is being done to expand the optical fiber transmission network in remote rural areas and on various roads.
Network capacity has been significantly enhanced through the installation and relocation of high-capacity routers and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) equipment towards equipment and network strengthening. Old switch equipment has been upgraded to modern routers. The capacity of links at various locations has been enhanced, and alternative (backup) links have been established as a backup. Due to this, even if there is a problem in one link, service can be provided alternatively through another link. Similarly, work is also being done to upgrade the microwave link.
Various works are being done with the aim of providing reliable and accessible telecommunication services, especially in the most remote and remote geographical locations of the country with low population. To ensure service continuity in those places, alternative link expansion, coordination with the concerned agencies, procurement of maintenance services, and infrastructure protection measures have been adopted.
