Nepal Telecom is known to be in talks with Netflix to bring the video streaming platform to Nepal officially. If the discussion moves in positive direction, Ntc will bring the Netflix service as a value-added service to Nepal. Although there is no confirmation of the collaboration, it has already sparked wide interest in Nepal and the digital sphere. Find what we know so far.
Netflix being the most popular streaming service in the world has also significant no of viewers in Nepal. Due to the unavailability of local payments in the platform, people have to rely on dollar cards, international payment or other third-party services to pay for it. Now if the collaboration between Ntc and Netflix comes to fruition, people can enjoy the streaming service with local payment, and we can even expect the cost of the service to come down.
Now 4G users in Nepal have grown to a significant figure with the expansion of 4G network nationwide. Ntc alone has around 1.5 crore 4G users in its network. With 5G still in the pipeline, people can only use 4G as the highest mobile technology in Nepal. Similarly, Ntc has around 3.5 lakh fiber users, with internet service of over 100 Mbps. So, all these NT customers can use Netflix once it comes officially as a value-added service.
Netflix seems to have come here officially but the local payment issue and smooth access is troubling. So, with the official introduction, the payment issue will be resolved along with the smoother streaming experience, using content delivery network/cache locally.

What’s the recent update?
The recent update on the Ntc and Netflix collaboration is that Netflix partners have officially discussed with Nepal Telecom’s commercial team on bringing the streaming service in Nepal. The deal seems not to be finalized yet, but the chances are likely for the operator to introduce bundle packages (Netflix + Ntc service). The bundled package could combine Ntc mobile data packs or Nt fiber internet with the Netflix subscriptions. So, this will remove the payment hassle as it is normally done using telecom billing, instead of some other international payments.

Advantages of Netflix collaboration with Ntc
The advantages of the Netflix collaboration with Ntc are beyond the payment issue and are like the ones below.
- Localized and affordable Netflix streaming service
- Improve user experience of streaming
- Easiness in subscribing package (like the data pack)
- Enhance NT’s data business
Despite the above advantages, there seems to be some challenges in the integration of the streaming service, billing on telco system along with the optimization of its data service for smoother experience. As more and more users will start streaming over mobile data, Nepal Telecom needs to optimize their resources or add more to keep up with the demand.
If the integration of such digital services with telecom service grows in Nepal, this will show the shift of user behavior towards on demand video content. Then, telcos will not remain the connectivity provider but a digital service enabler.
Recently, there were rumors of Uber coming to Nepal along with some rumors on Amazon interest in Nepal. And this latest one of Netflix is also creating a buzz for the Netizens of Nepal.
