Nepal Telecom (Ntc) had announced to make free SMS in its network for three days from Shrawan 29 to 31. According to Ntc, people have sent around 1 Crore free SMS from their network in that period. Ntc has provided the free SMS, as a part of their Corporate social responsibility for the flood victims.
Among the total SMS, people sent 17 lakh 30 thousands SMS on Shravan 29, 47 Lakhs 55 thousands on Shravan 30 and 47 lakhs 15 thousands SMS on Shravan 31. Ntc believes the SMS were useful to provide basic communication for the flood and landslide victims.
The government telecom company also informs regarding the alert SMS sent in the flood, landslide affected areas. For which, they have coordinated with department of hydrology and meteorology to send the early warning and alert SMS. The alert SMS is helpful for people to move to safe place and prevent loss of property in flood disaster areas.
Ntc sent alert SMS for 4 lakhs and 86 thousands times in the disaster period, only in those affected areas. Previously, there was an agreement between Department of hydrology and Meterology (DHM) and Ntc to send such free SMS in a bulk to the disaster prone areas. The free Bulk SMS for the alert and early warning was sought to save people’s life and physical properties.
Flood, landslide and no electricity from heavy rain affected Ntc mobile network in Eastern and Central development region. With their continuous effort, Ntc says they are able to restore 91 percent of the network in those areas. This is as per the information dated Bhadra 1, 2074. Similarly, Ntc mentions the remaining telecom equipment will restore as soon as possible.
