US tech giant Qualcomm has unveiled its next-gen Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G chipset at MWC Barcelona 2021. The flagship chipset will power Asus, Honor, Motorola, Vivo, and Xiaomi smartphones in the Q3 of 2021.
The event also marks the resumption of Mobile World Congress, the biggest tech show dedicated to mobile communications. Last year the program was canceled due to the COVID-19 breakout but with beefed-up security measures and less crowd, the MWC 2021 is back to business.
More power, More Performance
Qualcomm’s new chipset offers more speed and efficiency than its predecessor. The Qualcomm Kryo 680 CPU Prime core will clock at 2.995 (~3) GHz compared to Snapdragon 888’s 2.84 GHz.
Qualcomm says, its sixth-gen Qualcomm AI Engine offers a 20% performance improvement over its previous sibling. The chipset is capable of up to 32 trillion calculations per second. Qualcomm claims the chipset can deliver a download speed of up to 7.5 Gbps on 5G.
“Snapdragon is synonymous with premium experiences on Android. Then 888 Plus will help deliver the entertainment, connectivity, and premium experiences that users deserve,” said Christopher Patrick, senior vice president of Qualcomm.
Despite the expected performance bump in all aspects, the latest chipset will be marked for its more firepower in the gaming depart.

Elite Gaming Features
Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G will pack even more punch for smartphone gaming. The next-gen chipset will come equipped with Snapdragon Elite Gaming features such as ‘ultra-smooth responsiveness, color-rich HDR graphics, and mobile-first desktop-level gaming experience for hardcore smartphone gamers. The company claims, the chipset will reduce latency by up to 20% for more smooth gameplay.
Asus that has become known for its gaming ‘Rog Phone’ lineups over the years revealed that the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G will power its next Rog phones. General Manager Bryan Chang enthused that the latest chipset will take the performance “to the next level.”
Likewise, the President of the product line at Honor, Fang Fei, announced the upcoming Magic 3 series flagship smartphones will use the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G chip. Xiaomi and Vivo are also keen to use them for their new models later this year.

Qualcomm’s 5G mmWave
Mobile industries are heavily investing in 5G mmWave for its significantly higher perfomrance than other 5G alternatives. Qualcomm also confirmed that more than 35 mobile industries will support its 5G mmWave technology for 5G mobile networks. Collaboration between Qualcomm and telcos will escalate the reach of the advanced 5G networks around the world.
Qualcomm says its 5G mmWave tech brings a significant performance bump in 5G because it uses more spectrum in frequencies above 24 GHz which also complements sub-6 GHz. With it, telecom operators can deliver multi-gigabit of throughput capacity with slim latency.
Coming to the premium chipset, Qualcomm did not reveal the exact date of the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G release. But it may soon enter production as multiple brands will require them later in Q3 of 2021.
