Apple To Launch Only 5G-Supported iPhones from 2022

Apple will launch only 5G-supported iPhones next year. The company will release its revamped version of iPhone SE with 5G capability to further improve its sales volumes, Japanese newspaper Nikkei has reported.

The outlet has reported that the US-based phone maker will not release any 4G-only models next year. Rather, the company will sell its cheapest phone – iPhone SE with the fifth-generation network compatibility.

iPhone SE with 5G

The budget model iPhone SE will hit the markets in the first half of 2022. There is news that Apple’s in-house A15 processor will power the upcoming model which will get into this year’s premium handsets. Qualcomm’s X60 modem chip will bring the 5G connectivity on the cost-friendly handset.

iPhone SE is a lower-tier lineup from Apple that comes with an LCD display. The next year’s iteration too will carry a semblance to iPhone 8 and flaunt a 4.7-inch LCD screen. Apple will still lavish OLED screens on its premium 5G handsets.

Apple introduced iPhone SE back in 2016 to make the iPhones accessible for budget-iPhone-seeking fans. Subsequently, the lineup became a lethal reinforcement for smartphone sales. Especially, the lineup has been a big hit in Asian markets. The latest iPhone SE came out in April 2020 with a $399 price tag.

The iPhone SE, introduced in 2016, has been a volume booster for Apple due to its relatively low price. Its most recent model, released in April 2020, started at $399. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Mini — the most affordable among last year’s premium iPhone range — was priced at $699.

Apple Shelving iPhone Mini Model

Apple’s most affordable model among the flagship, iPhone 12 Mini’s sales have not been encouraging and it will be scrapped next year. The budget sibling came out last year with a 5.4-inch display but with its slump in sales, it won’t be part of Apple’s portfolio of devices.

Rather, an iPhone Pro Max with a 6.7-inch screen will replace the ‘Mini’ series. “It is pretty much decided that there won’t be a Mini next year, and there will be a relatively cost-effective version of the largest iPhone Pro Max instead. However, the designs for the detailed specifications for the four new models next year are not yet locked in,” Nikkei quoted its sources.

Apple is currently preparing for the launch of the flagship iPhone 13 this year and it will enter mass production in August. The company is expecting to manufacture up to 230 million iPhones in 2021 for both existing and upcoming models.

Apple made its 5G leap late than its competitors Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others. The American phone maker released its first lineup of 5G phones in 2020 with iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. However, the reshuffle with iPhone SE from 2022 will give iPhone a complete 5G connectivity across its devices.
