Qualcomm at MWC 2022

US tech leader Qualcomm has unveiled FastConnect 7800, and x70 5G modem at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC). Both are 5G products and come with the ‘firsts’ that will bring in the next-gen performance bump in wireless communications.

Qualcomm’s FastConnect 7800 is the world’s first WiFi 7 solution capable of delivering a blazing 5.8 Gbps speed. Further, it is capable of a minimum latency at just sub-2 milliseconds.

On the other hand, the X70 5G Modem is the world’s first 5G AI processor. Its major highlight again is its speed factor. It uses artificial intelligence to boost high band mmWave and sub-6 GHz connectivity. The modem can support peak download of 10 Gbps and 3.5 Gbps upload speed.

Let’s delve into details for each:

Qualcomm FastConnect 7800

Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 is the company’s next-generation 5G SoC. It is based on WiFi 7 and can deliver downloads of up to 5.8Gbps and at sub-2 ms latency. It also supports High Band Simultaneous (HBS) Multi-Link technology for link aggregation.

Qualcomm’s FastConnect 7800 5G solution supports the company’s new Dual Bluetooth and Snapdragon technologies with low power consumption, and simultaneous multiple devices connectivity.

It offers a major break from previous generation WiFi 6/WiFi 6E connectivity in latency. Meanwhile, at speed, the FastConnect 7800 dwarfs WiFi 6’s speed capacity which could peak around 3 Gbps.

At the product launch event, Qualcomm said, “FastConnect 7800 helps deliver the world’s fastest Wi-Fi – with peak speeds to 5.8 Gbps, which is 60% faster than previous generations. Additionally, FastConnect 7800 features the world’s lowest sustained latency – under two milliseconds – making gaming, video calling, and anything else you do online smoother than ever before“.

The FastConnect 7800 comes with HBS Multi-Link Technology

FastConnect 7800 is ostensibly a WiFi 7 based solution. Although the next-generation WiFi standard is yet to launch in the market, Qualcomm has already set its sights on leading with this SoC solution.

Among many perks, FastConnect 7800 comes with High Band Simultaneous (HBS) Multi-Link technology. It helps use dual radios with four links across 5 GHz (240Mhz channel) and 6 GHz (320Mhz channel) spectrums. This tops the speed at 4.3 Gbps or 5.8 Gbps aggregate throughput, respectively for each channel. It frees up the common 2.4 GHz spectrum which can then connect with other Bluetooth and IoT devices.

FastConnect 7800 improves upon the 4-stream DBS (Dual-Band Simultaneous) connectivity from its previous FastConnect 6900 solution. It supports  2×2 5GHz and/or 6GHz link connectivity among AP router, device, or client setups. This allows a device to connect to the AP over 4 different streams of WiFi 7. This reduces latency dramatically and pushes up the bandwidth performance.

Qualcomm says FastConnect 7800 would hit markets in Q2 2022 becoming the first WiFi 7 SoC.

Snapdragon X70 5G modem

Besides FastConnect 7800, Qualcomm also made headlines with its next-generation 5G modem Snapdragon X70. By using AI, the modem gives a performance lift to a 5G device by improving mmWave and sub-6GHz bands connectivity.

Although unannounced, the modem will likely fit into Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, the successor of the Gen 1. The product is ready to launch later this year.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon X70 5G modem can deliver up to 10 Gbps download and 3.5 Gbps upload speed. Similarly, the modem has the capability to perform 4X Sub 6 Carrier Aggregation and also CA on the uplink for 3.5 Gbps speed.

The key feature of this modem is its ability to use artificial intelligence technology for power optimization, speed, and coverage. By using advanced AI, it lifts the performance in mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G bands connectivity. The modem contains an AI-based channel-state feedback and optimization algorithm. This helps drive up the download and upload speed on devices it powers.

Multi-SIM and Dual-SIM Active

The X70 modem uses mmWave beam management to increase connectivity coverage and has an AI-based network selection algorithm. It is the first in the world to support the 5G band from 500MHz to 41GHz.

Besides these, the Snapdragon X70 supports 5G multi-SIM and Dual-SIM Dual Active modes. It is also an energy efficient5G  modem. The company says it is 60 percent more power-efficient than its predecessor due to its 5G PowerSave Gen3 technology.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon X70 modem will launch in 5G devices towards the end of 2022.
