On the opening day of the FIFA Football World Cup 2026, Nepal’s internet traffic reached a massive 109 Gbps. As recorded by Nepal Internet Exchange (NPIX), the surge in bandwidth highlights how enthusiastic Nepali football fans were as they hooked up to online platforms to watch the grand sporting event.
The NPIX traffic data show that on average, the internet traffic remained between 60 Gbps and 75 Gbps throughout the day. However, as the time approached the grand opening, the surge in the bandwidth was hugely conspicuous. The fixture in concern was the host Mexico playing against South Africa.

The highest internet traffic peak was recorded at around 10 PM in Nepal when the traffic surpassed 100 Gbps and reached 109 Gbps, passing through NPIX. The growth in traffic owed to the football fever gripping fans as online users across Nepal took to their devices to watch the match online. After the match ended, NPIX recorded a rapid fall in traffic, coming down below 50 Gbps and continued downward slope towards the morning hours.
You can see in the screenshot that Nepal’s internet traffic is mostly heavy during the day. Over the past week, bandwidth usage averaged 10-20 Gbps during late-night hours and rose throughout the day.

Most of the time, daily peaks was close to 100 Gbps. The World Cup pushed it to 109 Gbps.
