Apple’s new smartphone software iOS 16 will allow eSIM transfer via Bluetooth. This allows iPhone owners to retain telecom services on their own without contacting their operators while switching to a new device.

The US phone maker previously allowed activation of eSIM by scanning a QR code, now the Bluetooth transfer feature will add a remarkable option to the iPhone owners while they change their iPhone.

Apple recently launched iOS 16 at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2022 (WWDC). The next-generation operating system brings lots of enrichment to enhance iPhones’ usability and optimizations. Among them remains the ability to transfer eSIM via Bluetooth. This is a big upgrade from Apple in terms of elevating eSIM technology on their premium iPhones.

The feature enables iPhone owners to transfer their eSIM data from one to another device. Currently, users of eSIM have to contact their telecom operator when they change their iPhones. This will change for the much swifter and more convenient method with the iOS 16.

Previously, Apple added a feature through which users could activate the eSIM on their iPhones simply by scanning a QR code. The QR code sticks with the user for the future too.

How to transfer eSIM through Bluetooth on iPhones?

Do remember that the feature is available on iOS 16 only, the latest OS by Apple.

Anyway, if you do have a working eSIM profile and want to transfer it to another device, you can follow the steps below.

  • First, upgrade your iPhone to the iOS 16 if you haven’t.
  • Turn on the Bluetooth.
  • Launch the Settings app.
  • tap on the Set up eSIM option.
  • Now, you will see the option Transfer eSIM.
  • You can now transfer it via Bluetooth.

Tips: While initiating a connection between the two devices, keep them nearby for a faster and more reliable connection.

Apple first introduced the eSIM feature in 2018 on its iPhone XR and other siblings. However, the phone maker has now introduced a digital eSIM feature allowing users to transfer eSIM from one to another iPhone. The users can do away without installing a nano card and accessing carrier services.

eSIM technology is still constricted due to the lack of support

The eSIM transfer feature will soon be available in many countries such as the UK, and the US. However, the technology must also require support from carrier providers.

Besides, eSIM technology is itself scarcely available around the world with many carriers well behind to introduce it first. Many flagships and upper premium devices today come with eSIM capability but due to the lack of carrier offering it, it remains elusive.

The eSIM transfer feature comes in iOS 16. Apple has currently given beta users early access to it for review.

iOS 16 is compatible with handsets from iPhone 8 and above. It is set to roll out in the September launch event. Likewise, the company is likely to launch the much hyped-up iPhone 14 lineup on the same occasion.

In Nepal, eSIM technology could arrive soon. Nepal Telecom (NTC) has signed an agreement with Monty UK Global Limited that could bring eSIM cards for Nepali mobile subscribers in the first half of 2079 BS.

What do you make of eSIM technology? Would you prefer these virtual SIM cards over the physical ones used in today’s most GSM phones? Do share your opinion in the comments below.
