oppo first DSS 5G call

OPPO, the Smart device brand from China, announces to have made the first DSS (Dynamic Spectrum sharing) data call from its own smartphone. They have made the 5G DSS call possible for the first time with a collaboration with Ericsson, Qualcomm, Swisscom, and Telstra. This first call shall enable Telcos to commercialize the DSS technology in the coming days.

Many telcos have outlined DSS in their 5G rollout as it is cost-friendly as compared to other solutions either buying a new spectrum or refarming the existing ones. DSS call is the call made through the network which uses dynamic spectrum sharing.

What is DSS technology?

DSS stands for Dynamic Spectrum sharing which enables carriers to share the 4G and 5G spectrum. DSS also helps a carrier to roll out 5G on the existing 4G spectrum band, which is quite dynamic and based on the usage. The technology helps telcos to reduce the TCO (Total cost of ownership) of 5G network and shall accelerate the deployment of 5G technology on large scale.

  • Upcoming telecom technologies and trends.

As already mentioned the stakeholders for the call made from DSS technology are Oppo, Qualcomm, Ericsson, Swiscomm and Telstra. The call was made using a 5G enabled Oppo phone, which has Qualcomm X55 5G Modem. The call was connected from Swisscom network at Bern, Switzerland to Telstra’s 5G network at Gold Coast, Australia. The spectrum sharing technology used is ESS Ericsson Spectrum Sharing technology from Telecom vendor Ericsson.

The spectrum sharing was done one a FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) band. The first DSS call was also one of the achievements of the Oppo Ericsson 5G joint lab.

5G exceeds 4G performance in terms of higher speed, low latency. So, a video call from 5G will have an great quality and low latency makes the experience quite smooth. Read here what is 5G and services with it?

Here is what Senior executives from all the stakeholders have to say on the achievement.

Andy Wu, Oppo

Andy Wu, Vice President and President of Software Engineering Business Unit, OPPO, says: “As a leading global technology company, OPPO proactively works to accelerate large-scale commercialization of 5G. Our cooperation with Ericsson, Qualcomm, Swisscom and Telstra to facilitate the commercial use of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology is part of our in-depth collaborations in the 5G era. OPPO plans to launch 5G smartphones that support DSS in the next year, which will provide more stable, seamless, and speedy 5G connections, and hence a better user experience.”

Fredrik Jejdling, Ericsson

Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, Ericsson, says: “This industry-first highlights the value that Ericsson Spectrum Sharing has to communication service providers as they roll-out and ramp-up 5G. With this milestone achieved with our 5G ecosystem partners OPPO, Qualcomm Technologies, and customers Swisscom and Telstra, we’ve shown that our unique solution will not only enable service providers to re-use their 4G spectrum assets for 5G but that it will also support all 5G devices. It is the most economically feasible way to launch 5G on existing bands, enabling nationwide 5G coverage and helping make 5G accessible around the world.”

Enrico Salvatori, Qualcomm

Enrico Salvatori, Senior Vice President and President, Qualcomm EMEA, says: “Coverage is the next 5G killer app and this is another significant milestone and step towards ubiquitous 5G coverage. Dynamic spectrum sharing will bring key benefits to operators and consumers globally and the Snapdragon X55 5G -RF system is a comprehensive solution designed to allow OEMs to rapidly develop 5G multimode devices for a new era of connected experiences.”

Christoph Aeschlimann, Swisscom

Christoph Aeschlimann, Member of the Executive Board and Head of IT, Network & Infrastructure, Swisscom, says: “We are very excited to reach yet another 5G milestone with our partners. The first international end-to-end Ericsson-Dynamic-Spectrum Sharing call is the next step in our 5G journey. It was only possible with a well experienced team of provider, vendor, chipset and handset maker with a proven 5G track record.”

Channa Seneviratne, Telstra

Channa Seneviratne, Network and Engineering Infrastructure Executive, Telstra, says: “This latest collaboration of industry partners is paving the way for the faster rollout of 5G by using existing spectrum holdings to serve the needs of 4G and 5G customers in the same location at the same time. This collective implementation is yet another innovative example of how 5G technology continues to advance in a rapid fashion, and at Telstra we are pleased to bring that latest technology to Australians first.”

Currently telecom operators are struggling to get more spectrum band for 5G as it is costly and also the spectrum refarming takes lot of time and cost to use the existing spectrum. So, this DSS technology allows telecom operators to deploy 5G overnight in a cost-effective way. As Oppo has the first DSS enabled 5G smartphones that could be there in the upcoming phones, user can enjoy 5G speeds while making a call through DSS enabled networks.

  • Top megatrends for 2025.

Oppo, being a part of the ecosystem, is known to be quite committed to drive the growth of 5G networks globally. They are also doing their best in developing 5G standard with more patent, products and technologies. Oppo has also been collaborating with several global partners to accelerate 5G related technologies and products.

Oppo has also launched Reno 5G, the first commercial 5G phone in Europe. They have recently built a 5G joint Lab in partnership with Ericsson.
