A Virtual Job Mela was recently hosted successfully by Girls in Tech – Nepal in association with Jobs Dynamics and Genese Cloud Academy.  This very ‘Virtual Job Mela’  seemingly was the first virtual IT job fair in Nepal which showed a wonderful initiation and outcome as well. On 1 June 2020, more than 30 companies anchored their online job stalls with hundreds of jobs waiting for potential candidates. And, intriguingly the job fair saw the participation of 500+ enthusiastic youths, which was commendable.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused economic pandora for many of us. And during this time youths have been missing the entire cycle of academics, and its transition which includes attending regular classes to exploring new job roles. Finding a job you like at the beginning is a hard task but it’s even more challenging during a pandemic. So, as a solution to this problem virtual job fair was hosted to bring together employers and job applicants.

Applicant’s rejoice

As a process to be part of the job fair, applications were called from interested participants a few weeks before the virtual event. Then the applications were shortlisted and selected applicants were notified of the timing by email. During the event, the applicants could do various tasks from skimming companies in a virtual lobby, entering the companies’ virtual booths, checking out open positions, and having chats with company representatives, at the very-time.

Youths, newbies, and employers were connected through ZOOM which also provided a complete digital event experience for job seekers and recruiters. Applicants meeting the requirement were also hired on the spot.

This Fair received much positive recognition and affirmation from many companies and applicants. Moreover, Dinesh Silwal, CEO of Datalytics Pvt. Ltd., one of the exhibitors, stated, “It was our first time participating in a job fair of this kind. Normally, we want to be in the room with somebody and look them in the eye when we want to offer them a job. But the virtual job fair is a new reality. It provided us with a unique experience. We have hired a few team members through this job fair”.
