Apple Might Replace Lightning Port With USB Type C

Apple replace lightning port

Apple traditionally uses its proprietary Lightning port on its smartphones and tablets. However, European Union’s new legislation may force the company to shun the lightning port and use USB Type C on its devices.

One of the distinguishing factors between Android and Apple is the latter’s use of Lightning Port. The American company uses lightning Port on iPhones and iPad. However, European Union’s new legislation may force the American company to shun the lightning port altogether and replace it with USB Type-C across all Apple devices. Check out: Apple iPhones Price in Nepal.

For its own part, Apple has leaned towards the global standard USB Type-C on a series of products. Its iPad Pro, iPad Air has come equipped with the USB standard that is found on all Android devices. Rumors have it that the iPad Mini 6 will also come with the same Type-C port.

But the American company remains firm on attaching its iPhones with its own lightning port. For example, the company’s next flagship iPhone 13 will ship with a Lightning connector. But the European Union might force Apple and other OEMs to ditch the Lightning connector in favor of the USB-C standard for uniformity across all smart devices.

USB Type C is The Global Standard Except For iPhone

USB Type C is ubiquitous on Android phones. Virtually all smartphones come with a USB-C port for connectivity. To complement it, other accessories also come with the same port for charging and data transfer. While USB-C is the global norm for connectivity, Apple has embraced the Lightning Port that gives it a distinct identity as well as its own features. But, Apple has also made news about switching to USB-C at times.

USB Type-C and Apple’s Lightning Port

Apple was rumored to adopt USB-C for a long but it never materialized. The company stuck with its own Lightning Port. There are even rumors that Apple would skip USB-C and launch a portless iPhone that would recharge wirelessly. Given that iPhone prides itself on innovations, it may be a reality too. But for now, it doesn’t seem to hold water for an immediate future.

The EU Law Might Affect Apple

Reuters have reported that the European Commission is about to table legislation that would make USB Type-C mandatory on mobile devices in the region. While Android phone manufacturers won’t have an effect, Apple will have to forsake its Lightning Port entirely.

Reports say the legislation is being drafted and not much has surfaced about detail. The EU parliament has already voted in favor of a common charger last year citing its convenience and positive impact on the environment.

The EU will present the legislation in September that might force Apple to replace its Lightning Port with USB-C on iPhones in the future.
