Ncell Foundation, ICOM Nepal, and the Narayanhiti Palace Museum have jointly launched Sangrahalaya (The Museum). It is a research-based journal that covers the fundamental principles of museums, prevalent national and international practices, premises, and diverse aspects of history.
The move is seen as a vital example of private firms’ contribution to preserving culture and history. For Ncell, it’s part of its latest CSR campaign in contribution to the country.
Ncell, ICOM Nepal brings the Museum
The launch event was organized at the Narayanhiti Palace Museum. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badriprasad Pandey, unveiled the journal.
Addressing the launch event, Minister Pandey stressed the dimension of Nepal’s museums and declared the journal’s publication as “an excellent initiative.”
Praise for Ncell for the publication of the journal
Minister Pandey praised Ncell Foundation’s support in the publication of the journal. He called it “a commendable example of private sector participation in cultural preservation and promotion.”
He also shared that the government is working on policies for the registration, standards, and management of museums. Further, he said that Nepal’s museums and the artifacts have enhanced the pride of the country.
“Art and culture are our identities, and it is the duty of all to preserve them. We are delighted to collaborate with ICOM Nepal for this program under the public–private partnership model, to promote culture and heritage,” said Bishakha Laxmi Khadka, Corporate Communications and Sustainability Director of Ncell. She further added that preserving Nepal’s cultural heritage is one of Ncell Foundation’s top priorities.
Likewise, UNESCO Representative to Nepal, Jaco du Toit, shared similar feelings. He said that Nepali museums are significant for cultural promotion, community dialogue, and education. And he also called for the need to further develop the museum culture.
… expand the scope of museums in Nepal
At the same time, Chairman of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Nepal, Ramesh Prasad Dawadi, stated that ICOM aims to expand the scope of museums in Nepal and continue working for cultural preservation.
The museum “journal” has been published under the one-year project ‘Promoting Culture and Heritage through Museums’. ICOM Nepal implements this in Nepal in partnership with the Narayanhiti Palace Museum, with support from Ncell Foundation.
Main activities of the journal
The museum journal project will raise public awareness on the importance of museums and provide training to museum professionals. It will also create and disseminate museum-related resource materials. A booklet has been prepared and will be distributed to museums and similar institutions across the country. The booklet contains fundamental principles and key premises of international museum practices.
Likewise, President Dawadi says that over 100 museum professionals from Bagmati, Lumbini, and Gandaki provinces have been trained on the key principles of museum practices. The training took place in coordination among provincial, local, and federal government agencies. The training covered international museum standards, Nepal’s specific needs, and the roles museums can and should play.
The project has also prepared a documentary showing the history and journey of Nepal’s museums from the establishment of the first museum to the present day. It includes historical and contemporary perspectives of museums.
ICOM Nepal has started the project in coordination with Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation. It also has active cooperation from local and provincial governments.
