OpenAI has launched an AI-powered web browser- ChatGPT Atlas, which directly challenges Google Chrome’s dominance. The new product is the latest competition to Google as the AI giant seeks to capitalize on its growing internet clout.
The launch marks OpenAI’s latest move to capitalize on 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users, as it expands into more aspects of users’ online lives by collecting data about consumers’ browser behavior. It could accelerate a broader shift toward AI-driven search, as users increasingly turn to conversational tools that synthesize information instead of relying on traditional keyword-based results from Google, intensifying competition between OpenAI and Google.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser features
OpenAI’s Atlas browser comes with ChatGPT built in. It leverages AI to deliver many convenient features to the users. For e.g., it can summarize content on the web, compare products, and also analyze data from any website. It provides instant answers, smarter suggestions, and helps with tasks such as shopping. The company also promises privacy settings that users can control. The user can open a ChatGPT sidebar in a window on the browser.
Likewise, in “agent mode,” paid users can have ChatGPT engage with websites for them. They can research a topic and even shop for a trip. This mode exploits the capabilities of the ChatGPT operator agent, where the AI can do tasks for the user. The feature is “available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business accounts, says OpenAI.”

Google Chrome challenged again by OpenAI
ChatGPT Atlas is the latest challenge posed by OpenAI to Google’s internet dominance with Chrome. When the company launched ChatGPT in 2022, it went viral instantly and ushered in a defining era of AI. Google has tried to adapt by bringing AI Overview, AI Mode, etc. It has also incorporated Gemini AI into Chrome in the US.
Good for Google, so far, despite OpenAI’s thrilling rise, it continues to lead the presence on the internet with Chrome still boasting 71.9% market share as of September 2025, as per StatCounter. However, it’s obvious to say that OpenAI’s Atlas browser will bring a fresh challenge to Chrome’s extraordinary dominance. Also: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and it’s Impact in Nepal
Atlas itself comes amidst a rise of similar AI-powered browsers that are rising through the ranks. These include Brave Browser, Perplexity’s Comet, and Opera’s Neon. But with ChatGPT AI on its side, OpenAI could be headed for something big. Time will tell how Atlas evolves in the market that’s largely occupied by Google’s Chrome.
