The northern neighboring country China has come up with the world’s most advanced mobile technology, the 5G network in the Everest base camp. The base camp of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest has now got a 5G network which is made achievable by Telecommunication giant China Telecom.

To make this possible, Huawei Technology has teamed up with network operators if China – China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom to roll out advanced 5G to the world’s tallest place above sea level. The place has an elevation of 5,800m above sea level.

According to People’s Daily China, the 5G network has been successfully tested at a base camp in the northern mouth of Everest. In China, Mount Everest is called Chomolungma. The People’s Daily reports that the 5G Network has been successfully tested at the Everest Base Camp, which will begin formally from April 25. These mountains and base camps are considered one of the remotest places in the world and the deployment of 5G in such elevation is itself an honorable task.

With this service of next-generation mobile technology, the people are around the base camp and the climbers will be benefitted. This groundbreaking task was done in an effort to celebrate the 20th birthday of China Mobile, which is the biggest telecommunication company in the world. They established the connection to the base stations set up at the Everest base camp by overhauling the 177km transmission line from the main network.

There are altogether three 5G base stations and three base stations for the 4G. According to the news sources, the new 5G base stations set up at the camps at altitudes of 5,300 meters and 5,800 meters,  provides a download speed of about 1 gigabit per second. China Mobile is also setting up two more base stations that are expected to complete before April 25 at a very high altitude of 6500 meters which will provide the 5G network coverage at the summit as well.

With this setup, the China Mobile said its 5G project on Mount Everest marked “not only another extreme challenge in a human life exclusion zone but also laid a solid foundation for the later development of 5G smart tourism and 5G communications for scientific research”, as per China Mobile’s post on Weibo.

To give life to this project, there’s a team of 150 people providing 24/7 support. They worked on the installation and maintenance of the new 5G base stations as well as upgrading existing infrastructure on the surrounding areas, according to the company. Altogether 25 km of new optical cables have also been laid out to support this project.

Mount Everest base camp has seen a lot of technological changes since 2010. In October 2010, the first 3G base station was set up in the camp, and later in 2013, it saw the first 4G base station. Now in 2020, the base camp is equipped with 5G connection which is still not even available in many countries including Nepal. Whereas Huawei CEO has forecasted that 5G will come to Nepal in 2021.
